After a disappointing draw at Burnley, the Arsenal got themselves back to winning ways yesterday by comfortably seeing off Hull City courtesy of goals from Denilson, Eduardo and Diaby. With Chelsea and Manchester United again dropping points over the weekend, the Gunners have kept themselves in contention at the top of the table.

In freezing cold conditions at the Grove, yesterday’s first half was a scrappy forty-five minutes of football. Until Denilson stepped up to bend home a gorgeous free-kick on the stroke of the break, the most interesting thing that had happened was the minor scuffle that had ensued a few minutes earlier involving several players from both sides. It was nothing but handbags but it did spark a bit of life into what had been an otherwise flat half.

Arsenal looked a good deal more coherent in the second period though. With a goal lead, they passed the ball more convincingly and played like a unit. The match turned as the hour mark approached. Referee Bennett awarded Hull a quite ridiculous penalty which Manuel Almunia saved. Justice was very much done. Three minutes later a wonderful Arsenal passing move presented Eduardo with a tap-in from a couple of yards out and the game was over as a contest. The Gunners often get accused of trying to walk the ball into the net, but on this occasion they did just that.

Abou Diaby - who had one of his better games yesterday - finished the job in the 80th minute with an emphatic strike following another set of neat passes. Walcott might have added a fourth late on but his lob missed the target.

Overall, it was a pragmatic and efficient display rather than a spectacular and breathtaking one but it was good to see the team bounce back from the draw at Burnley so convincingly. Up at Turf Moor during the week, the Gunners could have - and maybe should have - sown up the game in the first twenty minutes. Aside from Fabregas’s goal, they had two or three really decent chances to kill the home team off. Arshavin was unlucky to hit the post and Cesc might have done better with the other major chance that came his way.

Unfortunately, Burnley weathered the storm and got a foothold in the match. They drew level when Thomas Vermaelen clumsily conceded a penalty and Graham Alexander converted the spot-kick. From that point, it was a pretty even game and a draw was probably the fair outcome as the home team wasted a few chances of their own towards the end.

The chief concern coming out the trip to Burnley was seeing Cesc Fabregas trudge off with a hamstring pull. Arsenal lost a tangible amount of momentum following his departure. Though the players still passed the ball around nicely enough, it felt like there was no one really driving the team on. We all know how vital Cesc is to the side and, apart from being the most creative player in the squad, he appears to have really grown into his role of captain too. In his absence though, it was frustrating that none of the other players seemed to have it within themselves to step up to the plate and fill in for the skipper.

Thankfully, his injury only appears to be minor and it is likely that he is in line for a swift return. Equally heartening though was the way the rest of the players reacted against Hull yesterday. In the second half in particular, there was a sense that a few of them did take responsibility for their performances and the victory was attained more through team effort rather than reliance on individual brilliance. Last season, Arsene Wenger talked about the team having "eleven leaders". This is great in theory but the reality is that the players rarely show a great deal of individual leadership. Yesterday though, there was a sense that, with Fabregas missing, the team pulled itself together to earn the result.

There are certainly several players in the squad that really do owe the manager and the fans a few performances and there could be no better time to start delivering those than whilst the squad is so stretched by injury - particularly with the busy Christmas period coming up.

Having negotiated tricky away trips to Liverpool and Burnley and beaten an awkward Hull team at home, three out of Arsenal’s next four games in the Premier League are at Ashburton Grove. This is a real opportunity to build a solid run of results going into the New Year. During this time they will also play their game in hand - at home to Bolton.

Looking a little ahead, the team faces a potentially pivotal period beginning on the 31st January when they have to face Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool in the space of eleven days. This three-match run could make or break the Gunners Premier League challenge but to be in a position where it could possibly be a "make" scenario, they have to focus on picking up as many points as possible at home over the next few weeks.

First up over Christmas will be the visit of Aston Villa to the Ashburton Grove. In the corresponding fixture last season, Martin O’Neill’s men ran out easy two-nil winners and could afford the luxury of missing a penalty too. The Villans are on a decent run of their own at the moment and this will be a tough match for the Gunners. A win though would keep the momentum moving in the right direction and be just about the perfect Christmas present for the Ashburton Grove crowd.

Have a happy and peaceful Yuletide.

Bravo Diaby! Good time for him to step up for the next couple of weeks while Song is away at the ACN. Denilson is showing that playing every game last year has prepared him for the long stretch we are going to need him for. If Bendtner comes back b4 the ACN is over, we should be in good shape for that vital stretch in Jan to Feb against the big three and then the Champions League.

Gudos to all arsenal player for fighting spirit against Hull

I think the boyz has done well for mr.wenger and is left for wenger 2 do something. For them 2 be at d 3 place,2points and 6points behind man u and chelsea respectively with a game at hand, coup with absent of our key players is job well done. Let wenger grase the good job with 1 or 2 players and the truphy is gunners

Tale of two halves, again. The game with Hull has striking similarity with that of the Liverpool game; nonsensical first half and spirited second half. Whatever it is, the team grinding a win at the end of the day is most appreciated. And as it almost seems there is divine help with Man U and Chelsea uncharacteristically losing points. It will be a pity if we fail to progress. Arsenal did this time, but the challenges lie ahead with teams like Aston Villa, Man U and Chelsea. They will not be as forgiving as Liverpool and Hull for Arsenal to kick start the game in second half. With a mix of ordinary players and impressive players turning in unimpressive displays around, it is very important to rally as a team with a tinge of leadership on the field. Arsenal players need to show grit and punch above their weight. And with a ray of hope that we can have some important addition in Jan, let us look forward to a fantastic Christmas and New Year. Wish everyone a great Yuletide!

Is it just me, or were Eboue and Sylvestre both quite impressive against Hull?

The midfield was dynamic, and Arshavin had struggled as a forward but was far more dangerous when playing on the left flank in the second half.

I am seriously worried about the Villa match. For me, this is just as important as a Man Utd or Chelsea match. Need I remind you that Villa defeated us last season just after we had convincingly defeated Man Utd and supposedly re-ignited out title challenge? Along Villa came and destroyed our illusions. Given what we know of Arsenal's inconsistency and given Villa's great form, this scenario could easily repeat itself. This is anything but a guaranteed three points.

Good analysis, you didn't talk about the January transfer market, I expect Wenger to keep to his word by buying a player preferably a striker. The players have voiced it out (Fabregas & Arshavin) that they need a different kind of strikern, that would vary there attacking options.I think that would go a long way in determining what trophy would be in our cabinet at the end of the season.

Good performance!! They showed some grit and dtermination but there is a lot of room for improvement. Almunia and Diaby stepped up when it mattered most. But Walcott and Eduardo, especially Walcott, should watch their game. Are they losing confidence? Only them will tell us.

well done boys for working so hard and keeping the team on track.I just pray that rosicky;cesc, nicklas recover on time.

Posted by franko on 12/21/2009

i think arsenal shud go 4 edzenko 2 beef up our attack because as it stands,we are depending solely on arshavin.

It wasn't a bad game for a Gunners team without a handful of their big boys(Fabregas, V.Persie, Clichy, etc). My man-of-the-match goes to Abou Diaby and I think Fabregas' absent gave him much room in the midfield. Wenger should fathom out how to get the best out of this lad, so he can still give his best even when Fabregas is there.

Posted by budibs on 12/21/2009

Its particularly delightful to see the boys get back into winning ways even when they don't actually look like it...but I sincerely pray for the quick return of Gael Clichy and Gibbs; Silvestre is simply a disaster waiting to happen. I never dreamed i would actually wish for Armand to play as much as i do presently, thanks to Silvestre! The chap simply lacks a sense of positional play, pace and a general inkling of the attacking role that his position offers with the kind of Arsenal play.
I do hope Walcott and Eduardo get their confidence back...whatever that means. We need options now more than ever.
Gunnerz for life

Good performance, especially after the disappointing display at Burnley. It was good to see Diaby in fine form. To me he was the man of the match. Our next game against Villa, is a must win. They should watch out for Young's dangerous crosses and also hold Gabriel, thereafter the three points will be in the bag.

The last performance was avarage but we managed to secure the points. It is however interesting to note that without Fabregas, Arsenal has no captain. Sylvester besides making stupid mistakes, he can not gather the courage to fight for the team gainst ill treatment by the opposition and the ref. The question is ask, is he deaf and dumb? We need a captain who can talk to the team and the Ref as well. You do not expect the coach to talk to the ref while the game is in play.Make Galas a C.In defance, Vermalen is doinf fine because he plays the ball and not the man as is the case with Galas and Sylvester. That is why they make more fouls. Walking the ball in the net is not bad but some of the chances should be taken out of the box. i long to see one day Alexender releas a shot from the D. We can score more goals from outside the box because the opposition keeper will be supprised since they expect us to walk the ball into the net.
Viva Arsenal and fast recovery for the injured soldiers

It was a much needed win for the Gunners! Arsenal needs to give Denilson more opportunities from set pieces. He was brilliant.

Sylvestre is still a donkey. Slow, old, can hit the net from 5 yards out. Is Senderos hurt, get him out there, at least he has youth on his side. Walcott needs a psychiatrist or maybe just more games to get his head fixed. He should have at least two goals from the last 3 he has played in.

Song is our warrior on the pitch and should be the standard that all the players should be at for work ethic and tenacity.

Alumnia stopped the PK at a key moment in the match, but still looks suspect on crosses and set pieces. I would love to see Vito get some more games.

Arshavin still plays at 150 mph. God bless this little Russian. Like Song, he plays with heart and shows that he gives a crap on the field when a bad pass is made or something less than quality of Arsenal is shown. Well done Andrei!

Go get those Villains on Sunday. Merry Xmas!

I still think we should get a centre-back, a reliable goalie and a strong forward during the January Trsf window......

Posted by Lawrence Hutchinson on 12/22/2009

I think Arsene Wenger should take a good look at arsenal next ten(10)fixtures and try to strenthen the team so we could have a good go for a trophy.

Posted by moses on 12/23/2009

we have been complaining about how unfortunatly injuries have destroyed arsenal's seasons in recent years, people thought it was an excuse. now manchester Utd can blow their trumpets in supporting the gunners as regard to how they ve been able to cope within the top4 with injury crises.

aston villa is the next team to go down, trust me we wolud not play with their pace rather we will bring them to our pace and get physical and then put the 3points in our pockets that day. 38points 4sure. UPGUNNERS!!!!

Posted by blablabla on 12/23/2009

arsenal seriously need to buy during the jan transfer window. wif van persie out injured, eduardo & walcott kinda unconvincing and song going for the african cup of nations, they nid a defensive midfielder, a centre back incase gallas or vermalean is injured.and a striker. i suggest they get dzeko/huseklep/palyuvchenko/david villa/dembele/pogrebynak/guiza or maybe even pato for striker. defensive midfielder they should get de rossi/matuidi/inler or senna. centre back they nid a tall guy to defend against set pieces. if only adebayor was a defender or peter crouch. so defender i would say either hangeland/mertesacker/marchena/puyol or chellieni

Posted by wynton on 12/23/2009

i have always had tremendous confidence in arsene. he ultimately makes boys to men look easy. good turn of events for all arsenal lovers. song is clearly making an impact, but we have denilson back and it looks great

Posted by Clive on 12/23/2009

We don't really have to buy Dzeko. What happens to him when Van Persie is fit again?

Posted by Raghu on 12/23/2009

I am an arsenal fan. But am really irritated with Wenger for having double standards. He fielded an under strength side against Olympiakos, and then complains about Wolves fielding an under strength squad against Manchester United. Why Arsenal effectively sent Standard Liege into the Europa League by gifting Olympiakos a win.

Posted by blablabla on 12/24/2009

BUY KAKA~~~~~~~~ LOL JUST KIDDING. HE'S TO EXPENSIVE

Posted by dan on 12/24/2009

Standard Liege drew anyway, meaning if Olympiakos lost, Standard Liege still go to europa league> Stop with tired arguements

Posted by dude on 12/27/2009

I'd still prefer Gignac. He's not cup tied and we can be competing on all fronts with him.

"Why Arsenal effectively sent Standard Liege into the Europa League by gifting Olympiakos a win. "

I'm afraid you're wrong Raghu.

1. Olympiakos would have still gone through because Standard Liege drew their last match, so win or lose against Olympiakos, Standard Liege was already heading to the Europa League.

2.Fielding an understrength side against Olympiakos made sense because Arsenal already topped the group and had nothing to gain for any type of result. However another injury to a senior team member would have had much bigger implications.

3.That understrength side by the way only lost 1-0 away. So its not like they just rolled over and played dead.

4.While Arsenal had nothing to gain from that match ,Wolves still had 3 points to gain from a very open league but lost 3-0 . Even the FA found it unusual and asked them to explain.

In this case Wenger's rant was completely justified

Posted by Insider on 12/27/2009

We need more aerial dominance. Buy Santa Cruz since he is now unwanted in Man City. Should not be too expensive.

Posted by Val on 12/27/2009

Eduardo is not for Arsenal any more. There is a young very good player in Montenegro Fatos Beqiraj, top scorer in that country and he is out of contract with his team currently. Only 20 years old. Somebody should recommend him to the club.
