Arsenal
Posted by David Young on 11/30/2009

Sunday's encounter with Chelsea turned out to be an all-too-familiar story. After a purposeful start by Arsenal, the Blues soon settled into their stride and proved to be stronger and more powerful in every department, cantering to a victory that puts them firmly in charge at the top of the table.

In common with so many of the meetings between the two sides in recent seasons, at times, it was boys versus men and, despite the positive spin that Arsene Wenger tried to put on things after the game, the truth was that Chelsea were by far the better team and the Gunners looked a long way short of what is required in terms of being genuine title contenders.

There was a telling statistic in yesterday’s matchday programme. Since Didier Drogba has been at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal have never won a game in which he has started. Conversely, the Gunners have not lost a match when the Ivorian has been missing. Despite his two goals and the fact that once again he proved to be Arsenal’s main torturer, to say that he was the difference between the two teams would be understating the fact that Chelsea were superior to the Gunners all over the pitch but, in a way, he is the personification of the gulf between the two clubs at the moment.

Drogba may have a few less-savoury aspects to his game but he is strong, powerful, skilful, he can finish and, most of all, he has a winning mentality. It’s true that he goes down far too easily too many times during most games but, when he wants to, he has the strength to brush defenders aside and create chances out of nothing. Looking across the Arsenal team there is no one who has his build or strength or - and this hardest part to admit - his attitude.

After a period of ever-increasing pressure yesterday afternoon, Drogba gave Chelsea the lead in the 41st minute and an unfortunate own goal from Tomas Vermaelen on the stroke of half-time put them two up at the break. Watching the Arsenal team trudge off with their heads down at the interval, one sensed the game was already up. An early flurry in the second period saw the Gunners have a goal disallowed but after that the momentum fell away and the visitors looked eminently comfortable.

Drogba added a third with a stunning strike from a freekick but the game felt over long before that. It was sad to see. Where was the Tony Adams-style character trying to pick the team up? Where was the Ian Wright-style never-say-die level of effort? Where was the Patrick Vieira combativeness in midfield? The answer to all those questions is: nowhere. The worrying suspicion is that, rather than those facets just being absent yesterday, they do not actually exist in this group of Arsenal players.

So, where does this leave Arsene Wenger and his squad? On the evidence of yesterday’s performance and the season so far, this team does not have what it takes to win the Premier League. The good form of the early part of the season looks to have been a false dawn and there has not actually been much improvement since this time last year.

Having lost four matches before the end of November, a quite incredible run between now and the end of the season will have to be conjured up for the club to have any chance of being in there at the death. One would be hard-pressed to find many Arsenal supporters who still have faith that the Gunners are in any way serious challengers - and, looking at the faces of the players yesterday, it is doubtful whether they have the sort of belief in themselves to pull off such a feat either.

It really is time that some cold hard reality was faced. Most supporters admire the way that Arsene Wenger has gone about building this team - developing players rather than just throwing money at the situation and getting them playing the game the right way. The truth is though that the players in this current squad simply are not good enough to win trophies year in and year out, regardless of how attractive they may be to watch at times.

It is always easy to look around after a painful defeat and pick holes in various individuals but, when the team has been so comprehensively beaten in a game that was very much a yardstick to measure progress by, it is impossible not to ask: with the exception of Cesc Fabregas, how many players in that team are really world-class? Arshavin shows flashes of brilliance but has only made cameo appearances so far this season. Song and Denilson as a midfield pairing are pale in comparison to Vieira and Petit. Theo Walcott again proved he looks to have the makings of being a decent hundred metres runner but not necessarily a footballer. Despite the innumerable number of chances he has had since joining the club, he looks little more than an average player – and a lightweight one at that - blessed with great speed. Nasri and Rosicky seem to be decent players when things are going well for the team but go missing when something needs to be pulled out the fire.

The defence have taken a lot of criticism over the past year and, again, there are obvious deficiencies in terms of their height and their inability to rack up a series of clean sheets. Defending, though, is a collective job. This is something that Arsene Wenger has tried to foster this season after deciding not to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer. Yesterday, Chelsea showed how it should be done. As soon as Arsenal won possession they were faced with ranks of blue shirts who had got themselves immediately behind the ball. There was just no way through for the Gunners and far too few options for them to exploit. Without Van Persie, they lacked a cutting edge. Without Nicklas Bendtner, there was no height in the attack. And, shame though it is, Eduardo’s injury has robbed him of crucial pace over five yards.

One game does not decide the outcome of a season and the culture of today’s game is that a couple of wins sees teams mooted as world-beaters but then a couple of defeats suddenly all adds up to a crisis but there was enough in yesterday’s match to show that this squad really still fall into the category of "the best of the rest" behind United and Chelsea - and they are even under pressure to retain that tag this season. Arsene Wenger has been given time and patience by both the Board and the season ticket holders to undertake his project of the past few years. That patience now seems to be wearing thin and the Frenchman really has to now seriously consider changing tack by bringing in some experienced professionals in January - and cutting loose some of the players who are just not up to the standard required.

Though the pressure is likely to mount on the manager in the next month, one suspects that the real intensity will come if and when Stan Kroenke takes a 30% shareholding and launches a takeover bid for the club. The current Board might be prepared to defer to Wenger on all playing matters but one suspects that the American, having invested millions in buying shares, is going to be far more demanding in terms of seeing silverware on the sideboard.

Before the visit of Stoke to Ashburton Grove next Saturday, the team travels to Manchester City on Wednesday for a fifth round Carling Cup clash. It seems likely that Wenger will field his usual combination of second-string players and youngsters for this tie. A win will lift everyone’s spirits but a defeat will only fan the embers of discontent and attract headlines talking of crisis at the club. After two defeats in two Premier League matches, this is now a very big game.

Whoever represents the club on Wednesday night, the team need to summon a performance that will restore some pride and confidence because both took one hell of a battering yesterday.

A tough pill to swallow for all Gooners but I'll take nothing away from Chelsea's performance. Hope we can get in a strong striker to cover for RVP. Eduardo just doesn't convince me enough to play as a lone striker. Neither does Vela. Bendtner just doesn't have that goal-scoring instinct. A good strong midfielder would also be a welcomed addition in my opinion. Song has done well so I'd get one to replace Diaby. Maybe someone like Miguel Veloso? Rambo has the potential but he might not have what it takes to go up against the big boys just yet. Still, whatever happens during the next transfer window, my faith will still and forever will be in AW's decisions. In Arsene we trust! Go Gunners!

Posted by onenil on 11/30/2009

A very perceptive report. This Arsenal side has hit a glass ceiling. Pretty much as good as they are going to get, which is top 4 material but not good enough to win anything.
Which questions the entire Wenger ethos that it doesnt matter about leaking goals as long as you score more. Arsenal can get away with this against the average defences of most teams in the Premier League but it just doesnt work against the Chelseas or Man Utds. who can mark tightly, concentrate for 90 minutes and stifle the close passing game. By my reckoning Arsenal had about 2/3 of attacking possession but could only muster 3 shots all game and one of those was a wild blast into row Z from Sagna.
Its time for a major tactical rethink. No one wants to see Wenger, a man who has achieved so much for the club, leave under a cloud.

Posted by ifeanyi udemezue on 11/30/2009

There is absolutely no doubt that the squad is in desperate need of players. I agree that there was no cutting edge without RVP. I used to criticise Bendtner but i now know better. He might have made a difference in yesterday's game as he would have been able to match the physical attitude of Terry and Carvalho. The much talked about understanding between Gallas and Vermaleen was badly exposed when Drogba got in betwwen them to side foot a cross for Chelsea's first goal. Walcott was running all over the pitch and was not able, as usual, to put a decent ball into the box. Eduardo has been a monumental embarrassment since Van Persie got injured.Even before RVP's injury, he threw away clear chances in the game against Spurs. We have often criticised Liverpool for not been able to cope without Torres and Gerrard. Is it not obvious that Arsenal is not coping well without RVP. Eduardo's best days seem to have left him. This is sad. Wenger should please buy players. This squad cannot compete.

I have just read the article twice.......TWICE, because I felt sure I could fault at least ONE word.......I couldn't.

Posted by Sever on 11/30/2009

A few points:
1) The central defensive partnership of Gallas and Vermalean is NOT world class so far. Their collective positioning is suspect.

2) When will Arsenal players just learn to SHOOT? Seriously, I almost felt I was watching a caricature of a football team at times. A direct approach could have been so much more threatening.

3) How psychologically frail is this team? The last 5 minutes of the first half were another self-destruct sequence similar to what happened against West Ham and Man Utd. The second goal was totally unncessary.

4)Bendtner, for all his faults, may in fact have made a difference yesterday. His pace and power have caused problems before, notably against Man Utd at the Emirates last season, when his running did much to unsettle their defense.

Posted by nikogunner on 11/30/2009

Methinks Time has come to rethink our options with RvP, Bendtner out. Asharvin-Walcott can pair up with Vela coming in to assist. Fab, Nasri, Denilson, Wilshere (What the hell happened to him anyway) and Ramsey can do center while Eduardo and Rosicky can flank, Song center half. I think Traore had a decent outing.
But early January we should Offload Eduardo and Bendtner and go for really efficient mean no nonsense clinical finishers. With the team we have, too shy to strike at one-on-foot balls and preferring to pace it in a bid to walk the ball into the net and not really keen on taking half chances, we will not get far in the Champions league. It worries me what will happen, God forbid should Song get injured…January we need someone who can put up a decent outing as defensive midfielder.

Posted by Stan M on 11/30/2009

"The truth is though that the players in this current squad simply are not good enough to win trophies year in and year out"

There's a lot of superfluousness in the above sentence. "The current squad is not good enough to win trophies" would be a more accurate (and tidier) analysis.

Posted by Emeka Obi Esq on 11/30/2009

This group of Arsenal players are just not matured and enough to win the Premier League. Secondly, Arsene Wenger's policy of making the players score goals by walking the ball into the net has completely failed. You can do it with smaller teams like Blackburn, but not the likes of Chelsea and Man U.I very much hope something urgent will be done between now and January, otherwise the season will fall apart like last season.

Posted by Donemore on 11/30/2009

Arsenal were not outplayed yesterday but they failed to score simply because there is no clinical finisher. The team certainly can not hope to compete at the highest level when they want to walk the ball into the net.We need a striker who can take half chances. Also in midfield we need physical presence. It is absolutely critical that the manager seriously start looking for another striker in January as well as another defensive midfielder otherwise this will be another wasted season.Worse still the current trend might affect the self belief of the current young players who might think they might never achieve anything with Arsenal and think of leaving. This will be disastrous. For Arsenal to earn the big four tag it should be able to compete with the other big four as well as the rest of the guys otherwise they will continue to pretenders.

Posted by okoh lucky on 11/30/2009

Like i did mention before now,i still want to believe that this lads are not serious title contenders. He should inject players into the team this January window market.

Posted by Clone Tony Adams on 11/30/2009

Excellent, accurate report. IMHO Aresenal have the following problems:

1. Arsenal have a fluid interchangeable attack which works well, but defences cannot be fludid, there must be structure so everyone knows his position.

2. Sagna was a disaster yesterday as a defender. The first two goals came from Ashley Cole crosses from Arsenal's left side. Neither were fast breaks and Sagna stood off Cole and allowed him to cross. Why was Sagna so far up the field on so many occassions when he wasn't doing his defensive duties?

3. Arseanl have only one style of play, they don't seem to be able to change if things aren't working.

4. Sign Kevin Davies. Yes he's not the most skillful, but he's big, tough and fearless. He'd unsettle defences and allow others to score.

5. Get some real men.

6. SHOOT!!! when near goal.

7. Arsenal are good and it wouldn't take much to become the best but we desperetly need tough players and more defensive organisation.

Posted by Ras Jebba on 11/30/2009

Gooners Arsene is failing us again with his policy, please when are we going to win people??just tell me??Its now time for the board to abolish all what Arsene is doing. This is not good at all..i agree that Stan takes over and maybe things will change and if Arsene cannot deal with it,im sorry he has to go!we cant take this anymore,we been patient enough,or izt like we supporters we not taken care of when we voice out our cry?Arsene Wenger should leave Arsenal or buy world class players.period.

Posted by Zach Hamilton on 11/30/2009

An amazing report Mr. Young. Truly a bitter pill to swallow, but I admire your ability to remove the bias and effectively analyze Arsenal's weaknesses.

Simply put, this was a MUST win game. It was a measuring stick, and we didn't measure up. It felt as though Chelsea was in complete control the entire match. Never did I get the sense that Arsenal's attacks would lead to a goal.

As you mentioned, the squad just ISN'T good enough. Hopefully this match finally has convinced Wenger that his squad needs to be upgraded. I've had faith in him all this time but my faith in this squad is gone. Without RVP (and Bendtner who is better than most think) our performance in the final third is AWFUL. Eduardo and Vela are not worthy of first team action. They just aren't good enough. I also agree that Walcott offers nothing to the squad either, I've been majorly disappointed in him.

We must add players in January if there is any chance of Arsenal contending for the title. Plan & simple

Posted by David Fitch on 11/30/2009

i have to agree with everything that you wrote only thing that worried me was the feeling after the game of what they can do now to improve finishing in the top four is a must but the way i saw the players leaving the pitch with their heads down and a differcult game in the carling cup it could effect the overall performance over the next few weeks.i never single out players they win or loses as a team. as far as title hopes it is not in there hands now must rely on chelsea losing games all arsenal can do is to keep on wining and hope for the best and try to avoid knee jerk solutions that could get the club on the wrong path ie liverpool.

Posted by seray jah on 11/30/2009

Although, I admired AW ways of raising players out of nothing and use them to beat teams mostly under the second half of the table. But this team cannot win anything in the presence of chelsea, man.u, liverpool, real madrid and barcelona. so, mr. AW you can say what ever you want about the age level of the team, but what the fans concerned about is the amout of trophies your team can win @ the end of the season. WE have no doubts over your ability to win trophies, but you will never win with the current players. there are two aspects of the game to win-1)skills & 2} strength. chelsea uses both to beat us. you made your mark at this team with the invincible because of the above 2 qualities (ie skills and strength). This years EPL and CL trophies are gone. because you will never win trophies in the presence of the above teams and current players you have. the transfer market is your solution with the right purchase and provided if the money is there.

Posted by msybs on 11/30/2009

I'm very very frustrated about this team. So dispointed is started lost to sunderland and latest chelsea. I convey message to Wenger pls dont be to proud to save club money. Pls think that to win a prestige cup you must have a world class player. Now not all players in arsenal shows that they are world class player.

If no contigency plan come out from Wenger I believe dont say you can beat MU or Chelsea or eventhough Mancester City. I'm very very sad that Wenger believe and arrogant that his young gunner can win trophy but now the story is different. See what next game will be happen.

Now I have to say that I have lost confident on this team compare previous that have terry henry, vierra, ashley cole.

Posted by Pynooo... on 12/01/2009

Arsene needs to put his selfish ethos aside and buy 3 key world-class players. He can buy then continue his "building" around the key players. It's such a shame that the once great Arsenal are now just a mediocre team... Shame I tell you.

Posted by ed on 12/01/2009

Why we lost has nothing to do with Wenger's style. We have no players. They are all injured.

The game would've been different had we had our full allotment off strikers, Van Persie and the big Dane. Eduardo and Vela don't have the skill to finish at this level.

Arsenal is pathetic on set-pieces, both defending them and taking them. A corner is a waste of time for us to take.

Remember our make-shift defense in 2006? Senderos and Flamini alongside Toure and Eboue. That wall stood firm. Why Senderos doesn't play confuses me. And we miss Cliche.

If our strikers are healthy, all we need is a thick, strong defensive midfielder and we are complete.

Boy did we miss Diaby on Sunday. He and Song had been putting together some magic. Dennilson is to young and soft.

Injuries are part of the game. But we've seen to have more than our share these past few years.

Posted by Maran on 12/01/2009

David, this is a good article but it was too predictable an analysis. But then how different can we get when it is yet again another predictable scenario and outcome. Boys vs men, Arsenal play football and Chelsea score the goals etc. Blues did not have to work very hard, but just do what they do best-defend, and score as necessary. But if you watch closely, Arsenal had taken the game to Chelsea and tried to penetrate, so much so that the blues players worked very hard and had fear in their eyes in the first half. But we just could not score. Why? 2 main reasons. One is partly due to the approach. It was impossible to break into the wall of 7-8 Blues by just passing around them. It was impossible to achieve anything by crossing, when we do not have anybody to meet it. The other problem was relying on Eduardo. He was hesitant, maybe clueless in all the best opportunities presented. Just one goal for Arsenal, it would have tipped the balance. But once Chelsea were 2-0 up, we lost it.

Posted by Trint on 12/01/2009

When RVP and Bendtner went down there wasn't going to be much hope. Eduardo and Vela are not getting it done.

Before the game I was very concerned with Gallas possibly being out. Turns out Gallas was at fault for both of the opening two goals. Half a step behind and Drogba was in and Vermaelen was forced to own goal.

The third, where was Almunia? The wall gets a side and he gets a side. A world class keeper is required but it can wait until next summer as 3rd is now the reasonable target for this season.

Overall a decent display from most, Chelsea turned in their chances and despite posession the Gunners never really mustered a threat besides the goal that should have been.

I do disagree with the heart and effort. I thought both Arshavin and Fabregas showed they wanted it but were unable to do it themselves. Without RVP and his clinical touch or Bendtner and his ability to win long balls (who else will?) then it may prove to be a struggle to retain the top 4.

Posted by k-man on 12/01/2009

To be fair,Traore does have the right attitude.Vermaelen is unfortunate. The players who are under par this season are Eduardo,Rosicky,Walcott,Diaby and Vela.If AW is not willing to invest, with so many under par players,I would rather see younger players be given a chance to prove themselves.
The team is always one-pass-too-many, poor crosses, poor shooting skill. The Blues does have good strategy though - let the gunners have their style, but we get the points. After 5 seasons, the style does get a little bore wihtout winning anything. It's about time to modify.

Posted by Maran on 12/01/2009

We had this familiar outcome for past few years and it is interesting that we remained optimistic of Arsenal. We had faith in Wenger as he was,"developing players rather than just throwing money at the situation and getting them playing the game the right way". But obviously Wenger had not progressed beyond that. Look at Barcelona. They play beautiful football and yet effective. They won against Real Madrid and they were applauded for defensive play in that match. Wenger does not have options of gameplans, because he has clones of players on the field and off it. They all play the same way and go clueless when they face stiff oppposition. Along with that they lose their confidence. Look at the match again. It was so pathetic. Nobody can turn on the magic, no one to rally the team, no one to call the shots, no one to be ruthless. They all do one thing-pass the ball and run. Enough. Time to bury the pride, take a leaf out of Barca's book. Assemble a team that play football and yet win.

Posted by TD on 12/01/2009

A few comments here on a very perceptive report. I agree when you say that Fabregas is world class, but he is, to a certain extent, a live example of what is wrong with this team. He has great talent, is extremely elegant, but disappears when the going gets tough.

Against Chelsea, Fabregas, along with other senior players like Vermaelen, Gallas and Arshavin, should have ensured that they respond well to going 1 0 down. Instead, we saw the first goal draining the life out of Arsenal.

In a team with such talent, the inadequacy of the mental strength is extremely frustrating. Has Chelsea never clawed back from 1 0 down in a big game to win it? If anything, going down strengthens their resolve.

Arsene Wenger knows that the mental strength is lacking in this team- hence the talk of great character after every win. However, the problem is, strength of character is something that comes from within, and something that cannot be instilled into a player without any.

Posted by ugandan on 12/01/2009

its a pity that arsenal is a selling club. cesc's body language could tell it all - disgust. i won't be surprised if barca unsettles him again. donemore's worries are exactly mine. the young players are certainly going to start thinking that there's little future in the club. the invincible arsenal that used to compete with the big boys is gone and without plan B, AW's days are just so numbered. i can't seem to ask for a better time than kroenke to take over. arsenal will continue to be title pretenders with all these youngsters. its simple, AW's tactics and philosophy are too archaic for today's soccer.

Posted by Din on 12/01/2009

No strike at all from our striker. What happened ? We can't compete with other big team if playing like this. Our striker and midfielder shall be trained to shoot on goal no matter where the ball is. Inside or outside penalty box and whether goal or not depends on luck. But at least we try. When we try to shoot on goal, the fighting spirit will come which will automatically generate on defensive charism on other player. Don't wait until one on one with opponent goal keeper to shoot. In current situation it is better we have a greedy player with mindset to score goal rather then passer player. Fancy football is nothing if we fail to win the game.

Posted by kennneth w on 12/01/2009

mr wenger i tnink is time to learn a lesson, just because of the absent of RVP arsenal cannot win a match again, please how much will it cost arsenal to get a world class striker like charmak in this january transfer.

Posted by taurayi on 12/01/2009

the article makes sense, we nid men in the central midfield and attack. i think the prof has lost it at this level. i dnt know what to call it but can we knock sense into his head t realise this time has serious deficiences. Vela and eduardo oh 2 poor boys, they cant compete at this level. in off season we thought Melo wd be coming, what hapened, the Prof's arr....nce playd it. RVP is sadly missd but he alone cant achieve it. please Mr AW inject new life into the team, new players who cn compete at the top level, championship material

Posted by Anonymous on 12/01/2009

I agree with Maran. This was a predictable analysis that began with the predictable "boys versus men".

Funny too how everyone is now wishing for Bendtner's return. I promise you this, he is not the answer.

Posted by PHILIP OBI on 12/01/2009

It is very dissapointing that we lost in a game of this magnitude, doubly sad because the team never showed a winning desire.Till now, I've still not come to terms why we were so beaten by Chelsea in a game that took more than 20 minutes before Almunia could see the ball and touch it.But for all our efforts, Eduardo wasn't good enough to even try a wild shot at row Z.In a previous article i did mention the need to buy a stricker rather than lamenting on the absence of a strong midfielder.Had any of our strickers been more demanding,Ashly Cole would never have ventured forward to cross for the two goals.

Now is the time more than any that AW needs to sign atleast two strickers to complement RVP (Whose injury should have been budgeted for anyway)and Bedtner.Vela is good but lacks strenght to compete with the likes of JT &cO, Eduardo and Walcot need be sent into the Carling cup team to gain experience from Wilshere and Merida, while Jay Simpson be brought back from loan.
Best of luck.

Posted by Adam Trotter on 12/01/2009

With RVP out, we are missing a lot more than before. It is obvious that we have had way too many injuries to compete at our highest ability. Why does this always happen. Maybe instead of buying a new squad, we should get a new physio. How many players get hurt every year. We are down to a 3rd string left back, we have had several injuries throughout the season, and it happens every year. Some one is not taking care of these players. I will agree with those who said we need more aggressive players who have heart and some steel. Our players, because they are so young, are not fully grown and matured. Fab said he felt stronger this year than ever. Well, he finally grew up totally. The rest of the team is still weak compared to Essian and older more mature players. So we need to get a few who are big and have the mentality that Vieria had. When the whistle blew, he saw red and went to kill. He hunted the ball down and killed anyone in his way. Our players don't have that at all.

Posted by titansgunner12thman on 12/01/2009

This commentary is on point. Not one statement, in my mind, can be refuted. We are weak. And Wenger just refuses to buy defensive. I am sick of him and his philosophy. Look we need some physical head knockers, and to be honest, a captain with a lot more heart. I was hoping we could win, but even if we had taken control of the whole of the game and dominated, does anyone think that this result -a loss- would have changed? NO. We would have given up a soft goal at some point. Wenger has some real soul and team searching to do.

Posted by bongs on 12/01/2009

what we need is a world class defensive midfielder, how about Felipe Melo? We also need a good strong and direct striker who's physical presence will be felt by defences, at this point l would'nt even mind Heskey. come on gunners lets get it together. AW please please sign Felipe Melo in January, he will provide the much needed defensive stability in midfield and give our other miedfielders more room to manouver. Our wing play is excellent but the crosses hardly ever come in and when they do their quality is poor or there is no presence in the box, i mean arsharvin contending for a ball in the air with John Terry, come on lets get a big strong striker, we definitely need that aspect in our game.

Blind Faith.False Hopes.Pride.Dreamland.Arsene Wenger. Familiar thread

It was all apparent at the beginning of the season that the current team was not good enough. The supporters rallied and AFC systematically ignored the calls. Instead of taking heed, supporters were criticised. Where do we stand now?

I am amazed how we think RVP and Bendtner would have saved us. Also amazed at the fact that we had too many injuries to key players, who? Diaby? Wait till we have injuries to real key players - Gallas, Vermaelen, Fab. Don't fall into the familiar masking that Wenger provides whenever we lose - "injuries" and not accept we lacked depth in the team.

In the first place we do not have enough experience and class in the team. We needed a world class striker, goalkeeper and a strong midfielder. None of this mattered at all in the plans for this season. Only money and pride did. It may too little too late even if Arsene does anything in Jan. For another season, we hope for miracles.

Posted by seray jah on 12/02/2009

Today, AW said he's going tobe active during the transfer market after when the team has been psychologically damage. Till the transfer window, I wonder which level this team would be before that time. some of us didnt played the game, we know a riped team when see one. there is no blame casted on the players because they are playing beyond there expected levels. You can push them so much up to a breaking point. in that point, there will be an increase injury crisis, mostly because of there maturity. please buy huge mature skillfull attackers who can hold one or two defenders @ a time.even with a bad game, such players can push defenders aside and score a goal. your attackers are too too too too small to turn a bad game to good. please release 4-5 small to bigger and more matured players such as the invincibles. they became the invincibles because of there skills and maturity/size. U need 3 players @least if you really want to want win any trophy in few years to come. I hope you do

Posted by TPS on 12/02/2009

My opinion, ARS should buy old striker but very experiance, like Ruud VN , John Carew and Trezeguet. They are tall and strong in physical.
Also not to expensive.

All the best Gunners.

Posted by Arsenaldevotee on 12/02/2009

Arsene brought flair, passion and the promise of greatness to Arsenal which he achieved. The Arsenal style has changed over the years for the better. His winning formula depended,on for the most part, his love of the passing game and the quality of the players he attracted to the Club However, these players were experienced quality players and the current squad are young and inexperienced with no experienced mentors on the field from which to learn. This team lacks balance. The practise of buying young midfielders, to mold into quality strikers has now shown to be flawed. The writing has been on the wall for some time and perhaps Arsenal, regretably, need to look for another visionary to carry the torch of promise.

Posted by Patrick Mmifinyana on 12/02/2009

Chelsea is a very physical team, so to win them you must first of all match their physique. Arsenal youngsters especially the front line cannot penetrate the chelsea defensive wall. One needs to be strong like robin is. So I agree with someone who said arsenal should not buy a youngster cos they hav plenty of those who match balotelli's capabilities. A solution is to buy a very robust frontline who would intimidate the likes of terry. Really what can vela, Eduardo and the like do against terry? nothing. Arsene stil has chance provided he buys an appropriate player who is more offensive up front. This must be a very mature and balanced player. If he does not do that, I don't see any hope of arsenal lifting any trophy this season. This might discourage committed players like Cesc Fabregas who might start thinking of going away from the Emirates

Arsene has tried his best but his best is no longer enough to win a trophy. What Arsenal needs now is someone else's best.We need a fire brand manager like Jose' Morihno.I have lost taste of Wenger's style of possessing the ball and not translating the effort into points/goals.Iam greatly disappointed. My worry is that our stars like Cesc,Eboue,RVP,Asharvin,Song etc don't get frustrated and leave. With this kind of play without scoring ability when will the boys ever lift up a cup?

As much as I hate to say this, I am beginning to wonder if Arsene really spends his free time watching football. Tactically, he does not impress me: players are constantly out of position, adjustments are never made if the opponent has stymied a particular strategy, subs are brought on because they exist, and he has players going from wingers to midfielders to right backs. Sagna has to be smart enough to realize that you can't continue to cross the ball into the box against the tall men of Chelsea, but Wenger should remind him at least. If Wenger had noticed that Chelsea were forcing Arshavin, Eduardo and Nasri out to the sides, reducing the potential impact of Fabregas and daring the Gunners to take shots from poor angles, he could have done something about it. Walcott and Rosicky looked clueless when they came in, as if they had no idea what their roles were. I still believe Walcott has potential - also, where is Eboue? If there is one player with heart & determination, he's the one!

after this lost to man city, its means the club will go without a trophy again this year. now let wait & see what AW will say this time. Is it going tobe about age, injuries Or what? If it about age, well U prefered buying teenagers instead of men. if it's about injuries, well if a boy plays against a man-there is a higher chance for the boy to sustain injury. Besides, you might say its because of D congestion of fixtures of both the EPL and world cup. Well arsenal players arent only players representing thoes competitions either. But the other teams have men not boys to sustain thoes intensities. dont forget size count too. you can convince yourself inthe tranfers window & buy 2 players. U need @ least 4 standard players. To my fellow fans, please dont be surprise if U start to see our few standard players playing below per or left @ the end of the season. They dont deserve tobe boed either when they played against us in few years to come. WE dont know who to boed

Other than Fabregas Wenger and his team suck, if i could run Arsenal i would bring in Frank Rijkaard, back him up with transfers and let him start football dynasty.

I am a staunch Gunners fan and ordinarily would not take kindly to the above report but i feel it was spot on and i will take it like a bitter pill to swallow. I might add that it was a pathetic display by my beloved gooners. Ironically it was very much like Chelsea under Scolari when they lost to Loserpool and Man utd last season. There is a saying that romance does not breed or sire children and this applies to Arsenal's type of play. The problem is Mr Wenger has remained stubborn to a philosophy that clearly is not producing results at the end of the season. More ominously for all you Gunners fans; we have lost heavily in all so called big games this season and i dont see this trend changing home and away thanks to Arsene who will not budge in to buy any player to bolster his squad. Of course in order for him to silence the growing murmurs and create false optimism he will promise to buy one or two players in January transfer window but in reality i dont see that happening. Goodluck

Excellent points, I wish they were wrong! Eduardo just seems too ponderous, and Vela isn't much different. They both move in slow motion. Drogba's goal reminded me of a similar goal RVP had a few weeks ago against Tottenham. They both can make something out of nothing and can hold the ball up while an attack forms up. And RVP scored 2 last year when they built Chelsea at the Bridge. Eduardo and Vela are too small and just not quick enough. I had great hopes for this team, now we're back to blah, and I'm wondering where the goals are going to come from. They're not going to come from Walcott, sorry.

Im really unhappy with Arsenal this was kinda of pathetic. They controlled the game

Arsenal has been a border line team since they took the approach of equipping the team with young and inexperience players (no prejudice here). Top players make difference in vital seconds in a vital match and is how much their price tag has been reflected in the trade market. I am not talking about men vs. boys, that would be disrespect those young and talented players, not only from Arsenal, but globally. You may observe that Arsenal has not lack the ability to hold the ball and always shows good occupancy ratio even against the top teams. Having said that, without the ability to put it into the net would not get any silver ware. That's where the difference between top players and great players.

With a troop of insufficient reserved firing power, at today's intense competition in various championships, you'll be lucky to get into the last quarter finals in all competitions. Silver ware is just a far cry.

i don't know what happen to Mr Wenger.. I know he is the best menager ever in EPL. His idea and tectical is better than fergie and Ancelotti but he was unlucky. He builded Arsenal and without him Arsenal will not be the big four.. The youngters are do not prove that they can win any trophy this season.. Please born another Henry, viera, and more player that can make Arsenal won this season.. sorry for my bad english..

i still don't know why wenger doesn't change his attitudes towards the team, definately the players themselves won't change & continue to be reluctant, the style of play is good but at the end of the day results matter alot, another thing the team needs to be srengthend,in central defence; gallas as aweak shield, still problems have to exist, clichy's left back is good as long as he's fit but with injuries that makes it worse, song seems to be another veira but he won't be available in january, denilson is still slugish, nasri and rosicky seem to be in holiday in england, when it comes to the frontline;the boys seem not even to know what to do,so really what kind of seriousness is that, thats why united & chelsea still remain favourites!,p'se wenger return to wining ways by spending in january on big name players otherwise players like cesc will go where they can win silverware afer all he's world class player.credit to old players who're mentoring the new ones,so far,not too bad for change.

all points are on the mark. yet, if arsenal doesnt play like arsenal, i'd be watching chelsea instead of arsenal.

About
David Young Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
