Arsenal
Posted by David Young on 09/30/2009

Two vital wins over the last four days have put the Gunners in control of their Champions League group and seen them head in the right direction in the Premier League too. In their different ways, the victories over Fulham and Olympiacos have shown that this Arsenal squad has developed since last year. On Saturday, the team proved they could "win ugly" and defend a slender one-nil lead and, on Tuesday night, they showed relentless endeavour in breaking down an Olympiacos side that had no attacking ambition whatsoever and defended with ten men.

After last season's debacle at Craven Cottage, many Arsenal supporters were looking to Saturday's match against Fulham as a barometer of whether this team has the heart required to come away from tricky away grounds with a result. Roy Hodgson's team are a different prospect on their own turf. They raise their game when hosting higher profile teams and are capable of overturning the formbook - as both Arsenal and Manchester United found to their cost last season.

Arsenal were a long way from their best, particularly in the first half, but when Robin Van Persie latched onto an exquisite pass from Cesc Fabregas and converted a sharp chance, it was enough to give the Gunners the edge. Some determined defending and a few decent saves from stand-in goalkeeper Vito Mannone saw the lead held and the three points safely banked.

The performance was in total contrast to last year's effort when a lazy and complacent Arsenal team sauntered about waiting for victory to come to them. That day, the team got exactly what it deserved - nothing. Sometimes though, making sure you come away with more than you deserve can mean the difference between winning a title and finishing in the places. On Saturday, Fulham had the better goalscoring chances and, at times, looked the much better team but Arsenal, having seized the initiative, stood firm and shut them out.

It was the sort of performance that was the stock in trade of the classic "one-nil to the Arsenal" squad of the early-mid 90s and if the more artistic tendencies of the sides Arsenal Wenger presides over has finally been augmented by the ability to grind out a hard-fought - and even undeserved - victory when required, then that can only bode well for the coming months.

Olympiacos set the Gunners a quite different task on Tuesday night. Particularly since the move to Ashburton Grove, we have become accustomed to away teams turning up with nothing more in mind than playing for a nil-nil draw and hoping to maybe nick something on the break. The Greeks didn't appear to even have aspirations of achieving the latter for most of the match and barely managed to force their way out of their own half throughout the ninety minutes. To their credit, they did make things very difficult for Arsene Wenger's men and, as the minutes ticked away, it was beginning to look as if no matter how hard Arsenal huffed and puffed they could not blow the Olympiacos house down.

The breakthrough came in the 78th minute when Eduardo made a run down the inside left channel and timed his cutback from the goal-line to perfection and found Robin Van Persie who swept the ball home. Eight minutes later, the game was made safe when Andrey Arshavin finished off some scintillating build-up play with a thrillingly extravagant back-heel into the net. The Russian looked dubiously offside but the home support couldn't have cared less as they celebrated an inspirational goal.

It was an encouraging sign that the Gunners were able to find a way through such a determined defensive wall. Plenty of other teams visiting Ashburton Grove will deploy the same tactics but one senses that the squad is now better equipped to deal with such situations and has more options than just looking to Cesc Fabregas to unpick tight defences. The result puts Arsenal firmly in the driving seat in their group and a couple more wins in their final four games will be more than enough to see them through to the knockout phase of the tournament.

In the light of two good results, Arsene Wenger has been talking up his squad to the media - most of whose questions concerned what the manager would do with the money he has at his disposal following the news of Arsenal returning a very healthy annual profit. As always, Wenger gave the current set of players his full endorsement, saying that he did not envisage any major new signings in the near future and that the squad was strong enough to compete. Competing is one thing, winning trophies is quite another though. Clearly, the Frenchman's answers where designed to deflect speculation and also to express his belief in his players to the outside world. As we all know the manager will render himself deaf, dumb and blind when it comes to publicly defending his players. That said, his answers will grate on some supporters. With millions sitting in the bank, reportedly hearing him say that he doesn't feel he can find better players than some of the current personnel seems a little deluded, if not faintly ridiculous.

Arsenal fans ought to be very proud of the way the club is run though. It is self-financing, independent of a single benefactor and does not just throw money it hasn't got at buying new players. Even if Wenger's answers were purely designed to neutralise questions over whether he will spend his transfer kitty or not, there is always room for improvement - as the signings of Arshavin and Vermaelen have shown. Reading back through what the manager actually said, more focus should be given to the quote: "If you are convinced you can maintain your policy and he is the player who makes the difference, then you spend money". Most supporters would be content with that. If the right player came up at the right price, then the club would buy him. That said, Wenger's quotes are geared to supposed calls for new strikers when top of most supporters' shopping lists would be a defensive midfield player. Still, this debate is academic until the transfer window opens in January. The squad is what it is until then and the most important thing right now is for them to concentrate on building a run of positive results.

Arsenal will get a further chance to show how much they have developed on Sunday when Blackburn Rovers roll into town. Teams managed by Sam Allardyce have often been a thorn in the Gunners' side in recent years and there is no doubt that Rovers will try to make things difficult for the home team and give them a rough ride. If "dealing with over-physicality" can be added to "winning ugly" and "breaking down ten-man defences" in the Gunners' repertoire, then Arsene Wenger's current buoyancy about his squad, and his assertion that they have matured, will start to have some real credibility.

Hello fans,

The arsenal squad is good but we need a prolific striker to make it better. A striker from south american club side is not bad anyway so that he can play in the champions league.

Posted by No Lies Mick on 09/30/2009

The transfer window will be certainly interesting after xmas. If Reo-Corker is on his way out & Song goes to the African Cup, I think then Wenger will make a move. Reo-Corker fits the bill as a defensive midfielder. His profile nearly suits Wenger's mould. 25 years of age, english(if only to get the media off his back), 3.5 million cost. He ticks all the right boxes. What does Reo-Corker get? With respect to the other clubs mentioned chasing him, he gets top 4 club? European football, and a serious chance to fulfill ambitions.
I can only see 2 reasons why he wouldn't come to Arsenal. 1 The wages aren't right. 2 Wenger didn't want him anyway.

Posted by Shayourfunmi on 09/30/2009

A defensive midfielder in the mould of Christian Poulsen or Esteban Cambiaso will make Arsenal a force dat's reckoned with in European football once again.
Also a central defender to cover either Vermaelen or Gallas in case of injuries or suspension'll be a good addition. 'Cos Senderos & Silvestre though experienced but lack d confidence and ruggedness of modern day central defender.

Good results of late to be sure. However, I am constantly being disappointed by Diaby. He gives the ball away too easily, and his overall negatives far outweigh his occasional fine finish. We need to pull Cesc back alongside Song, and maybe put Arshavin in the role behind the lead striker. We then have room for three more up front in Arsene's 4-2-1-3 setup. (Maybe have VanP/Rosicky, Eduardo, Bendtner/Walcott for the three up front with Eduardo as the ST - as he deserves a long run in that role. And maybe even give the exciting Wilshere some chances on one of the wings!) Go Gunners!!!

Arsenal need a player in the mould of Charmak (Bordeux). Wenger please go for him and your team will surely clinch a trophy or two.

Posted by Harlem Gooner on 09/30/2009

Well written!

I'm glad to see that some members of the media actually recognize that our ugly win against Fulham is exactly what we need to do more often. Unfortunately, many of the same journalists who'd proclaim Man U or Chelsea automatic champions for a 1-0 grinding win, were the same ones claiming that Arsenal must be headed for relegation because they dared to win a game they didn't dominate. Hypocrisy almost befitting a politician!

That aside, our match against the Greeks uncovered two worrying points:

1) Song's first inconsistent game: he looked like a madman yesterday. He was all over the place and probably should've received 3 red cards for his violent tackles.

2) Diaby looks worse and worse: I'm hoping it's a slump, but he's doing well to prove himself worth of a subs place in the Serie B. He was quite determined to gift Olympiacos the ball as often as possible and looked unfit to service RvP, who needs a strong Target Man to catch long balls and deliver them to his feet.

Hi gunners,
Finally enjoying being a gunner and only hoping that such form lasts the entire season but if this is to happen,Wenger has to act on Diaby whose confidence seems to wane with every game and shop for a sharp goal scorer to help our forwards of the moment.
Am happy with Mannone's progress and pray the that he keeps the standard all through;Defense,a big wow and my big boys, frustrating teams like Olympiakos yet to visit the Emirates are still many and you should not give way to frustration like last night minutes before the goal.
Otherwise its much fun watching u play these days and David-great articles.
Go After All Gunners

Gunner needs to scout or buy new Def Mid, incase Song and Denilson couldn't play. Eduardo need to play more frequently along side with VP.

Go Gunner!

The match against Fulham can be seen as a benchmark for the so-called improved Arsenal side from last season. They have demonstrated better reslience, and win 1-0 even if it is not the entertaining win. Lessons learned. In this match, the performance by Mannone was more than valiant. It has illustrated that a good goalkeeper can be critical to positive results. Looking at the waves of clinical attempts by Fulham, we may have lost the game if not for Mannone's heroics. Like I had said before, Arsenal had often neglected this position. Lesson must be learned. Our midfield was losing the ball more often than it should and I think there were obvious gaps. Arshavin had a off day. Diaby still in Bahamas. And Fabregas lost the ball frequently. It was ugly win alright, but lesson must be learned. Arsene often rejoices after a good win and uses the mood to rationalise his decisions and faith, some of them flawed. Having good set of players is not enough. They must deliver at this level.

Hi Gunners,
i would agree that it's nice and feels good to be a gunner. However, i will agree with the other comments about Diaby, i don't know what is happening to him, he is turning into a liability to the team. The balls he loses, if it's against more efficient teams then we would be in trouble and unfortunately, it looks like it is getting worse each game.

Lets keep going gunners

Hello Gunners, Don't worry - things are fine. We are going places this season and the signs are all there for smart observer. AW need need buy anyone - there are enough players who are excellent - so long as injuries are kept at bay. There are Walcot, Nasri, Denilson Wilshere - who needs anybody!

Posted by Sam Okebe on 10/01/2009

Hi All,

Excellent article.

But 'Harlem Gooner' i totally disagree with you.
Song was man of the match in that game ( Vs Olympiacos), worked tirelessly throughout the match. Please get your analysis right..

Keep it up Gooners.

Posted by sulman on 10/01/2009

i don't know why AW hasn't sold Diaby?????? sell Diaby and Bentdner, give the money to charity!

Posted by madchemist on 10/01/2009

Well writtetn article!

I believe the missing piece missing from the team is not a defensive midfielder or another attacking option, but rather a reliable and consistent goalkeeper. Almunia is too inconsistent and was out of sort at the start of the season. Mannone is gifted but too inexperienced. We missed out on Shay Given when he was available after Newcastle looked doomed for championship last year. What do you guys think of David James to give Alumina a needed competition between the goal post? Or maybe Antonis Nikopolidis?

Posted by Paul Russell on 10/01/2009

I have noticed a couple teams doing things a bit different tactically this year. Agbonlahor is playing in the place of Carew or Heskey for Aston Villa, a pacey, scoring player rather than the strong, holdup type player in the same place.
I look at that as if AV is trying to find another way to play to mix things up and be less predictable.

Arsenal may be trying to do the same as they have a difinate style that works but teams may have a "book" on how to combat it. What do people think of Bendtner playing on the wing? A way to mix things up and get results in a different way? Or another case of Wenger plugging in the player he has into a role because he does not want to go out and get another player, a la some of the odd usage patterns for Eboue and Song?

I personally enjoy seeing these odd tactical changes and it does offer a change that might unlock a defense but all the same I bet there are DM options that would not break the bank or team chemistry Arsene could pick up.

Posted by Harlem Gooner on 10/01/2009

Sam Okebe,

While I admit that my statement that Song deserved 3 red cards was exaggerated, and I do agree with you that Song worked tirelessly throughout the match, I stand by my analysis that this was his first inconsistent game.

He worked harder than any other Arsenal player on that field, yes, but he looked sloppy and not in keeping with his previous performances this year, which have been of an impressively high quality. His tackling was effective, but violent and not necessarily efficient; think Lorik Cana. Another official may have been justified in considering two yellow cards that game. More specifically, his performance in the second half dipped; this may have been a cause of fatigue as he was left to defend alone for much of the game while Diaby spent the day wrapping the ball as a gift for the Olympiacos players.

Song was not the Man of the Match. The broadcast commentators pointed to Arshavin; I would've picked Clichy, but hey, I'm always biased toward defenders.

Posted by Chris G on 10/01/2009

Other than maybe finding a defensive midfielder and a backup centreback, I don't see anything that this Arsenal squad need. Senderos is a good back-up in case Gallas or Vermaelen go down, and Denilson can be play the defensive midfield role; so I don't think there's anything pressing to do when the transfer window opens. With players on the bench like Vela, Walcott, Wilshere, Ramsey and Rosicky, this squad looks pretty loaded as it is.

Posted by Fritz Alfred on 10/01/2009

Good to see the Arsenal playing a more rounded game. In order to be champions, you have to able to "grind" out these type of wins. Rosicky looked quite impressive and barring any injuries, will be a force once again. I am concerned that when Song leaves in January, that Denilson may not be fit enough and Diaby just isn't good enough. i have read many suggestions on the blog, but i prefer Rafael Van De Vart as that CDM that we need since he is wasting his time at Real Madrid

Posted by Aneto on 10/01/2009

Arsene Wenger should sell Diably, I can't understand how he makes the team sheet, he should not even make SUBS, he alwayus breaks the pasing flow and gives teh ball away 100% of the time.
Wenger needs to get Arshavin and Eduardo more into the game and he definately needs to but a defensive midfielder and also a center back.

Posted by Ronald on 10/01/2009

Lee lee,it has always been like that.am one man who never had a single doubt in Wenger, but I think the game has changed face and he's still denying it.
And yeah we need a goal keeper 2 win cups but it cant be calamity-James,Nikopolidis,I have watched him a few times and in all he has always convinced me but he is 37.
Prizing tested gloves lets say 4rom Roma or Jusk-whatever from Bolton can do

Posted by DIPO OWOEYE on 10/01/2009

I just seem not to understand the reason why wenger keeps both Diaby and Bendtner. Is it not obvious that the two players are just NOT it?To crown it all,i am always shocked that he doesn't stand form the technical area to shout on this players when its very obvious they are playing rubbish.

Posted by grand funk diaby on 10/01/2009

with 3 in midfield, we don't need defensive midfielder. we need to be injury free. if this season already seem optimistic, imagine the next. when the kids get a little older.

arsenal have the kind of squad that can win this title convincingly

Posted by ade84 on 10/01/2009

we have 3 leftbacks,5 centrebacks,2 rightbacks,2 defensive mid,5 attacking mid and 6 forwards;add the three goalies and you have a squad of 26. That's massive! we don't need to sign anyone else. Not unless we sell someone first.
Don't forget that some of these players are homegrown players required for Champs league registration-Diaby,Song,Senderos,Bendtner... No team in europe has the same quality and quantity of home-grown talent, only barca comes close. We must keep these players and improve them.

Posted by David Fitch on 10/01/2009

the win at fulham was a good one they had to battle hard to get anything. still question mid field fulham were able to mount quick counter attacks from defence and there seemed to be no midfield or defender to stop fulham again the goalkeeper came to the rescue but fulham will think they deseved a draw. while this was a test of how to grind out a win the bigger test is this weekend against blackburn big sams sides are always differcult to beat and have well drilled defences. arsenal need to win this type of game to maintain a title run.

Even a Carling Cup would be enough for me at this point :)

Posted by ok on 10/02/2009

Sell Bendtner. I wonder why he feels he is so good. Eboue is better cos he is determined and plays different roles for the team.

Posted by A Bomber on 10/02/2009

Its all about Eboue people. Just pass him the ball and let him do the rest. What a champ.

Posted by The Man on 10/02/2009

I dont understand why everyone is calling for a DM player. Song has proven himself beyond doubt in my eyes and is the only irreplacable player in the squad. I will be serously worried if Cameroon perform well in the African Cup because no player will be able to fill his position.

Posted by Easy Vee on 10/02/2009

Hi! Good people, I think the following players should be shipped out of Arsenal and we will be just fine 1. Diaby 2. Bendtner 3. Almunia 4. Clichy. These players are too error prone to have in the team especially in this era where teams are required to be efficient (take your chance and score a goal for each opportunity created or lose a ball and the opposition scores to punish you). We need to get back up for Song, I am happy with the way he has progressed. Injury to Vaemaelen will be catastrophic, we do not have cover for him. He is a really class act and has made Gallas look good.My suggestions is that with an addition of a striker (Chamak), defensive midfielder (I leave this to Wenger to decide on who) and a defender (Philip Mexes of As Roma) we will be world masters.B4 I 4get let me acknowledge that signing Arshavin was a master stroke by Prof. Wenger as he is very proficient & with him and Rosicky in the team, gone are the days when we used to wonder how we will score.Go Gooners!

Posted by ANDREW MOMBO on 10/02/2009

Arsenal has a good team but they need cover in certain areas 1st we need a big central defender to cover for gallas or vermaelen when they are injured and also wenger should sell senderos and silvester cauze they will never be good for us,we also need a defensive midfeilder and ther are many that are on the market now,one last inclusion is a prolific striker who ca adopt quickly and i have one in mind Qincy Jones from sunderland if we get this boy the Ade useless will b out of our minds and we will b an awsome team goodluck gunners

Hie Gunnerz

I think we are going to win the championship this season.AW should at least buy a defensive midfielder.

Posted by azmi on 10/02/2009

AW seems to have delvelop differ tactics for differ game. Song is begining to be in the mould of a good defensive midfielder. His tactical fouls and simple passes which makes our defense more creditable this season. But i have to agree on diaby , he is like eboue of last season. after the own goal at during the match with ManU he seems to lose confidence and making silly mistakes. anyways even without him arsenal have plenty of attacking options, once walcott, nasri is back from injury and rosicky back to fitness we have a healthy choices of attacking options. With ramsey, wilshere pushing for first team the squad seems alright this season. Hope arsenal can keep the pace for the season and finally break the 4 trohyless years and win something to prove all the critics wrong with AW and the team.

Gd luck for the season

Posted by Matthew Wilson on 10/02/2009

I am impressed with the way our boys are performing this season. You can look at our two defeats in the league but after all they were against teams we will be challenging for the title this season.however we must win these games in the future. Good result against fulham and olmpiakos but i must say why does wnger persist with Eboue he above all others including diaby is a liability. He conceeds fouls and should be sold to foirentina as was the original plan in the summer.where was sagna??was he injured??i just dont like the guy...wenger needs to find another option there in the case of clichy or sagna being injured...and defensive holding mid is essential in jan...Valouso of sporting would be perfect..and maybe a steven taylor as a back up for vermalaen and gallas!

Posted by Mc Syd on 10/02/2009

Hie All,

The Gunners palyed the best attacking football against Olympiacos on Tuesday. It was a beauty to watch. If they could continue playing with that spirit other teams will have difficulties to beat Arsenal this season. Every player apart from Diaby was fighting for the ball. Arshavin played his best football in an Arsenal shirt more than he did against Liverpool when he scored 4 goals.

I agree with others that Diaby is a liability to the team. He loses the ball quite often and easly and putting his teammates under pressure. He should be coming in as a sub.

Go Gunners!! We are behind the beautiful game.

lovely article, well written. i love arsenal, always have. i agree with almost all the comments so far. my 2 cents- we are in dire need of another goalie, a defensive midfielder n an attacker. i doubt if arsene will do anything in the Jan window cos our form appears to have picked up, if it hadnt then he wld have definitely made use of the window. its sad really cos he's so obstinate n the board is more interested in making/saving money than winning trophies, so whatever he says/does is with them. it wld take a miracle to win anything this season but i'm a gunner 4 life so i'll still be a fan regardless..

Guys i am happy that our analysis seems much in line, but Diaby has made mistakes like all other players. He needs to learn from them and he will be such a fantastic player. He needs to pass the ball more and stop holding on it for too long, something that has caused him to loose the balls too often and put us under severe presure. As for the article, it's well written. We need to demonstrate more power to resistent teams and break them down to pieces. Our defence has improved tremoudeasely and money does not mean you should spend. I still feel we need a cover up for CM as well as a powerful & imposing striker who can hold the ball and create more space for our ever mobile team. We dont have to spend more money, but just have to get the real deal. I mean a Reo-Coker and even the Egyptian under 20 youngester Talaat will do. Afroto, Bogy or Islam and even Arafat will be great cost effective additions. We should also not forget that we have Nacer, Thomas & Simpson on loan.

Hi gunners,
Why are we criticising Eboue, Bentner and Diaby? How many Arsenal strikers have the height of Diaby abd Bentner? That is exac tly why they are been used so they could cause havoc in the air for opponents. Moreover Bentner has been giving us important goals, no doubt. For Diaby, in the match against Olympiacos, he covered had the highest number of passes but it was not his day after all thats why those passes where against us. I suggest wenger rests him a while say 2-3 matches then try him again. We need not to buy more players, by the way, which player do we buy? Except Messi forget it. Aresenal has a trophy winning team not just a bunch of footballers but a football team.
Thanks Wenger for your good works.

His game is getting worse and worse. cant hold on possession, but still like to hold the ball for long time. Even Wilshere , Ramsey,Denilson,Nasri, Rosicky even Merida much better than him.I ;m very disappointed every time he starting in 1st 11.Sign a new player will also a good option or just give the chances to younger player. He make no different on Arsenal current attacking force or defensive role.

Posted by Chris on 10/02/2009

If we're talking purchases to support (or even impact) the squad, I think two fairly reasonably-priced players that could do a job for Arsenal are from AZ Alkmaar. Stijn Schaars and David Mendes da Silva are both defensive-minded players that could play defensive midfield or (in the case of da Silva) center back. They've both been solid for AZ and Holland and could be ready for that next jump in level.

Posted by shaydest on 10/02/2009

The Gunner's have defo improved..atleast they look like not getting bullied off the park.

Song has been impressive and Eboue has the desire, pace and sense to change play-his shooting is woeful, but his distribution around the 18 has been brilliant.

Bendtner has also improved greatly and has really surprised me with his creativity especially on the wing. He may not be fast, but he does know how to create space for himself.

Our liabilities so far are Diaby and Almunia. The former for his clumsiness and inability to read the flow of the game plus lacklustre positioning and tackling while the latter for his inability to boss aerial affairs in the 18. Mannone has come thru' tho AW has defied sense many times in sticking with error prone players. I'd let Almunia warm the bench for now and send Diaby on loan.

January is still abit far to start looking for options but I've mentioned our weak areas so far.

I agree with Wenger , Arsenal should not buy players for the sake of buying. But the club should buy if the right player with good attitude is identified, especially in the defensive midfielder and center back positions. I added center back because I don't believe we have a cover for Gallas and Vermallen should they become injured. As for the defensive midfield position, we need one to support Song. If these players are bought in January, we will have a realistic chance of winning the Premier League, as our offensive options are in order.

AW has a very good team and i am very proud of the way the young players are preforming this season especially Wilshere. Song is doing a great job but i think AW should sign someone to help out Fabergas a bit. And Bendter is doing good this season also, he is a creative player. Diaby should be replaced by Wilshere or Rosicky for the starting eleven. The one key thing Arsenal is missing is a consitent and experienced Goal Keeper

Hi Gooners, I just like da faith u gyz put in yo team an yo manager thanx a lot.

As 4 mi, da olny weak link in da team is in da posts. This season alone Mr. Almunia has not even made any sensible save. We have seen teams get results due to da briliancy of their goal keepers da likes of Chalsea, Man U, Real madrid at one time depended on casilas 4 da reasults.

Am saying if manone inexperienced as he is can help making a save or 2 in a game let Almunia fight 4 da place in da team istead of him being thrown back into da team straight way after injury.

Go Gooners Go an hard luck dis Season.

Well written article.

Couldn't agree more that Arsenal need some of those one-nil wins which they rarely produce last season, and against Fulham, it was a typical well fought win although I must say Fulham is the better team.

Against Olympiacos, they played quite well, and as an Arsenal fan, it is really encouraging to see them able to attack from the first minute and dominate till the end, and I think the difference in that match is Song, who did an excellent job in covering the back four. Fabregas should've done better with his finishing. Arshavin showed glimpses of what he is capable of.

Overall, it's been a good week, but I agree with some of the comments, that Diaby is really awful in these two games, keep giving the ball away. AW should take note of this.

Besides, when Rosicky is on the pitch, the attack looks to be more fluid, and more there's more creativity in the attack, so it's really promising.

Things are looking bright for Arsenal at the moment =)

Gunner need buy one back up central defender.
Eventhough Gallas and Vermaelen are fantastic now, the fear of injury is the begin of success. Opposing team player(s) may want to target them and injure them to prevent future meeting.

Congrats to Arsene as the longest Arsenal manger. This should be a time to do some personal reflexion on his part. We are happy that our team manages finances very well like a good business venture. Football is also about winning trophies. For five years Arsenal has won nothing. There is nothing to celebrate about it. We fans want to celebrate like Man.U and Chelsea. To win something this year, Arsenal need an out and out striker.Does Arsene not see anything wrong that Vermaelen is the highest scorer. It is good but it indicates that right now we do not have a good striker to bang in the goals.Arsenal need a central midfielder. Van Persie may score some and Eduardo but their efforts will not be enough. Why does Wenger stick with Diaby. He is the worst player in the team fielded right not. He gives away the ball.Under no pressure he gave Manchester United a cheap goal. Mannone was very good in the pre-season and has even improved. He should replace Alumnia who right now is a disaster.

hello gooners
we are really playing well 4 nw but am scared and i hope that we can make it last after xmas........as for player we need to ship out diaby or maybe loan out to a prem leg team, then buy a tall CB, a good DMC, and get a clinical striker along side edu, we need to gt rid of player lyk silvertre nd sederos and replace them with performers we can trust

Posted by Nicholas Wilson on 10/02/2009

Question to all of us, Is there a chance we are to deep, but not with brilliant players? Granted the likes of Bendtner, Eduardo, Walcott, Nasri, Denilson are all players that would start for most every squad, but i think most of them are role players not starters, perhaps to sell some of them and buy 2 very high quality players.
I feel we need a quality goal pocher the likes of RVN for example and perhaps a GattusoESC player. In saying that im more then confortable to suggest that should things go well, we are more then capable of winning something this year.
Just for fun what do people think of this formation?
Sagna- Gallas - Vermaelen - Clichy
Song
Rosicky - Fabregas - Nasri
RvP - Eduardo - Arshavin
I think its a pretty impressive squad, granted not perfect. I feel Clichy needs to tighten up and sometimes Cesc looks lost but top to bottom they are better then pool, chelsea and utd and dare i add city to that list? nahhh forget them

Posted by AZ Gooner on 10/02/2009

When will Carlos Vela get a chance? Probably never I know but he complemented Gio DosSantos so very well in WC Qual for Mexico.

Anybody else tired of hearing Cesc will leave the club? If he does, I will be upset sure but there is inconsistency in his game as well. Prima donnas we don't need.

Go Gunners!

Posted by Ribery 07 on 10/02/2009

dude! how can u even think of selling nasri and walcott? eduardo maybe, bendtner and denilson yes i would sell them. i can see u go for the overated players.

Posted by Anonymous on 10/02/2009

we need de rossi.

Posted by Aang on 10/02/2009

"a few a decent saves by Manonne"?? whats that about? He had a few decent saves, and 4 or 5 incredible saves that should have been goals. Give credit to the kid he saved arsenal's arses.

Hi people-
Just one comment on Diaby. I think Diaby has really never delivered to his potential, all indications are that he can be a great player. I have always wondered why the boss has kept faith in him but Diaby is one player who lacks consistency, in addition to spending a good amount of the season on the treatment table. Rem the Carling Cup Final against Chelsea when he accidentally collided with Terry? Up to that point he had played excellently but because of the scare of Terry's initial blacking out, the boy froze, his performance dropped, Wenger had to substitute him. You always feel he will improve on performance and consistency but its never the case!

Hi All Gunners Fan
Nice Article i love Arsenal i love the way they play but i still think we need at least three signings in order for us to compete r be seen as major challengers for Titles (BPL n Champions League) any other trophy don't really count.
Start with defensive midfielder (Makoun, Mautidi, Cambiasso) are definitely Arsenal material
striker (Chamouk or Ben Afra fit the bill)
Finally a defender (Hangleand or Turner)
We need to put Diaby on loan he is a liability gives the ball away too much n i just dont have any confidence in Almunia.

With that said if we can make those additions i tink our squad will have a good mix of yuthe n some experience n be more less fragile throughout the season in terms of injury worries

Posted by Jose on 10/03/2009

Sorry Nicholas Wilson but that looks like you've got 12 players in your line-up (if u add in a keeper). I wld keep the 5 in mid; Song as holding player and ahead of him Nasri, Rosicky, Fabregas, Arshavin. I'll choose one of either Eduardo or RVP. Of course with the players we have we can just as easily switch this around and play 2 upfront by dropping one of the 4 midfielders (more likely Rosicky as he needs to be rested every now n then due to his fragility). Let's not forget we also have Denilson, Bendtner, Walcott, Diaby, Vela, Wilshere...I really dont see why ppl keep sayin we need more attackers. HOWEVER, i personally feel we need another central def midfielder (Denilson CANNOT play that position consistently and well, only against the smaller teams can he do it). I would go as far to suggest bringing back Viera or even getting Gattusso for the rest of the season. They dont have to be 1st 11 all the time n Song can learn a great deal from them.

Buy Flamini. He isnt doing so well in AC.

Hi Gunners
Arsenal is a good team but one problem which I have never seen any body mentioning is about not having a consistance goal keeper and a left back. I some of you will say Am mud cause clichy can run and diffend well. The truth is that 90% of arsenal goals came from error being made by Clichy, Example is Man City match. This guy need to defend more than attaking, We have lots of attackers. We dont need him to do that even if some of you will say that is the way we play. He need to change other wise We will keep blaming other diffenders because of him. About Almunia thanks god is not well and second one too. Almunia has cost us many trophies in years sorry to say that. They are all good goal keepers but not for 90min. We need to buy a consistance goal keeper. Am not sure if the young boy will be consistance. Three clean sheet for arsenal!! It is unbelevable I wish him best of luck. And advice him to shout at clichy all the time if he wants more clean sheet.

Posted by n sambor on 10/03/2009

I don't agree with the criticisms of Diaby and Almunia, actually - and why is everyone going "AW should take note" when it's obvious that as Arsenal manager he'd know best? And that Diaby's playing cause AW decides, innit...

Diaby's looked off the pace, yes, but then again we've lauded Eboue this season when last year we were ready to let him go. If anything, I remember Diaby lashing a couple past Portsmouth earlier this season and looking extremely impressive - give him time, and in any case Nasri's still injured, remember? I remember AW deploying him behind Fabregas in the Diaby role at the tail end of last season, and I think that he'll provide the necessary competition for Diaby and Ramsey too.

As for Almunia, come on - we did this whole "substitute 'keeper replaces erratic old one' with Lehmann three years ago! Chucking Almunia after a couple games won't help. And unless Buffon type keepers are available in the market there's really no cause to do so.

In Wenger I trust

Posted by ben afam on 10/03/2009

I have always believed in ARSENE WENGER.I think he should streghten the squard, just incase of injury. We are the best.

Posted by JO2ker on 10/03/2009

I think everyone here should play Football Manager... Let Wenger do his thing!! Arsenal foreva!!!!

Posted by Ryan on 10/03/2009

Nicholas Wilson, your formation looks good, but the lack of a keeper might prove to be a stupid choice.
haha just messing but yeah until we get a good defensive mid we wont win any trophies.

Posted by Ade on 10/03/2009

A well written and concise article. What I don't get is so called Arsenal fans asking for another striker, someone even suggested a South American player!!! Do these people know anything about football? Do people just write becos they have a keyboard and a screen?

Here are the relevant issues, Arsenal has enough I repeat enough attacking options that any team would die to have. RVP, Bendtner,Vela,Arshavin,Walcott...should I go on?
Arsenal needs cover for Vermaelen and Gallas if either is injured. Djourou is still out injured and Senderos/Silvestre amount to one player in my view.
I think Diaby has lost his confidence since his own goal against United. Arsene needs to work on him and bring him back to the goal scoring level of old.

Posted by goonertillidie on 10/03/2009

Easy Vee

I think you are completely wrong. Clichy is thhe best left back in the league, and Almunia is injured and is not at his best, BUT he is a huge part of Arsenal. I believe very soon Diaby will prove you wrong (possibly against Blackburn) and once again win your hearts over...

Posted by opeyemi on 10/03/2009

go gunners
i have hope in this boys, pls prof.should capilalise on man utd draw and chelsea and liverpool draw twomorow.but AW needs defensive midfielder for song who can also play aa central defender like hangerland so that he can cover for thomas in case of injuries.go gunners, arsenal 4 blackburn 0

Posted by windellgunner on 10/03/2009

sOMEBODY MADE AN EXCELLENT COMMENT ABOUT REO-COKER.I'VE ALWAYS LIKED HIM AS A PLAYER , VERY STRONG HAS A NICE SHOT CAN TACKLE AND WILL WILLING TO PLAYANYWHERE HIS MANAGER WANTS HIM TO PLAY. HE WOULD BE A GREAT PICK UP FOR ARSENAL IN JANURARY AND I DON'T KNOW IF HE CAN PLAY IN CL GAMES BUT HE'S 25 AND HAS LOTS OF EXPERIENCE.

Posted by TPS on 10/04/2009

Hi people

Needs to tighten up central def midfielder,
job in covering the back four.

Hope arsenal can keep the pace for the season.

faith and trust in
our AW.

Posted by TC on 10/04/2009

I have to agree that i think diaby is a liability. Everytime he touches the ball i cringe as he doesn't have the ball skills needed whatsoever.
Dont get me wrong, I think he is a good player for a "middle placed" premier league squad, but not one of the top four as could you imagine him in Chelsea, Man U, etc!
Bendtner is becomming a good player, but at present still wastes so many good chances - I think another year or 2 on loan should get him up to speed.
But its always easy to comment in hindsight so i'll leave it up to Wenger

Posted by Isley Williams on 10/04/2009

Arsenal has done it. As expected! this is the team we want to look up to and beat our chest and say "ARSENAL FOR LIFE" even if we're the ones under a route because we know that this team has discipline and skill and tactical intelligence. Their game has changed radically and has thus made them unpredictable in a good way.

Go Gunners, GO!

6-2 win against blackburn just proved anything Wenger said and done..besides lack of defensive concentration at the early minutes, the rest were just incredible..cesc is always fab, and the team showed a great winning mentality

well done gunners, keep working hard..and the glory soon will be ours..

in Wenger we trust !!!

arsenal defence is shown suspect, they allowed cheap goals. they real needs to work on it if they want to go far. arsenal has been my team even if they are not doing well but thank GOD they are in the right track.but need to show character. Wenger has always be our man bcos of his love youth development.

Posted by Kabir on 10/05/2009

We need a player like fletcher who isnt afraid to stick a foot in..

Posted by Paul N on 10/05/2009

I am going to shock most of you. ARSENAL DONT NEED ANYONE!

Our defense is not as bad as it seems we are just a little nervy at the beginning of matches. Once we play a few more games we will be much more settled defensively.

There has been some very weird goals against us not to mention 2 own goals.

Relax and support the team! We will win the PL!!!

Posted by Larry on 10/05/2009

David...would appreciate your comment on two points (1) Eboue - Last year I was among those calling for his sale. This year improved play especially at right back. Not thrilled with his playing chums with Adebayor at Man City but so be it. But vs Rovers at the final whistle he had a face like a wet weekend and walked immendiately down the tunnel without congratulating his team mates. Is he really that valuable to the team that this type of nonsense should be accepted (2) How much influence does Pat Rice have on the practice pitch or in the dressing room? Here's a man with 500 matches as a defender for the Arsenal; a long international career; years as a youth team manager and assistant manager. And yet, as a unit, our back four continues to give me fits. If Wenger is not keen on the defensive aspect of team play surely Pat Rice has the experience and credibility to effect improvements.

David Young replies:

Hi Larry,

1. Eboue does seem to have rehabilitated himself after his troubles last season. Despite that though, I don't see him as anything more than a solid back-up for Bacery Sagna at right-back. I can no longer see any justifcation for playing him on the right side of midfield now that Rosicky is back and with young players like Jack Wilshere stepping up and creating genuine competition for midfield places.

2. I couldn't tell you the level of influence Pat Rice has behind the scenes but one suspects his role is more weighted towards cajouling the players and keeping the team organised rather than him necessarily contributing much tactically - that has always been entirely Arsene Wenger's domain and he will call upon various sources for appropriate advice when he needs it. I take your point about the defending but, in a season where so far the average number of goals per game across the division is the highest it has been for forty years, it would seem that no one is that good at defending right now!! Certainly, if you look at the so-called Big Four and none of them have defences that even come close to the back four that Wenger inherited when he took over. Maybe defending is a dying art. But the way things are going this season, with all the main contenders having credible and effective attacking resources, it seems highly likely that the team who actually goes on the best defensive run between now and the end of the season will become Champions.

Hi, Wenger is a great coach not only in England but in the world. The team now is good, what we need just courage and fight from the beginning to the end. The team should use energy and be hunger for the goals. The last weekend spirit should be enhenced where everybody should score. They sometime need to do like Arshavin, Bendner, Rosisk, Fabregas, just try to score while out of the box. We need a trophy this year...... We can`t wait and we can`t give up. Gunners do it
