Ashburton Grove got its first taste of football for the season as Arsenal hosted the Emirates Cup pre-season tournament. The Gunners took on Athletico Madrid and Glasgow Rangers in this semi-round-robin competition and took the trophy after notching up victories in both their games over the weekend. Whilst these matches tell us next to nothing about how the season will eventually turn out, there were a few interesting pointers and individual cameos for supporters to chew on.

On Saturday, it was fantastic to see Tomas Rosicky taking his place in the starting eleven and playing his first full half of football in front of his home crowd for what has seemed like an age. In fact, it has been an age. January 2008 was the last time Arsenal fans saw him in first-team action and it has been a long wait for both the player and the supporters to see him make his comeback.

The Czech international was deployed in a central midfield role against Athletico and made a bright start. Hearteningly, he was involved in a few challenges and showed no lack of appetite for putting himself into physical situations. Many have suspected that his best position is playing more centrally, just behind the strikers, rather in than out wide and, though his return on Saturday was more steady than spectacular, he did look particularly comfortable in the role he was given. Rosicky will provide the manager with a range of midfield options in the upcoming season that have not been at his disposals for nearly 18 months now.

It was also interesting to see Arsene Wenger setting his teams for the weekend up in a far more interchangeable formation than the highly dependable 4-4-2 that was his hallmark during his earlier years at the club. Last season he experimented an awful lot with five in midfield but this rarely resulted in the sort of free-running from central positions that was hoped for. Instead, it seemed to discourage the midfielders from over-committing themselves forward and, generally, appeared to be a more "safety first" approach. Over the weekend a slightly more fluid version of the five in midfield formation was adopted, which looked more like 4-3-3 when the team was going forward but reverted to 4-5-1 when the team were on the defensive. It remains to be seen whether this will become the standard set-up for the season but it is clearly something that is emerging as something of a theme in the pre-season games to date.

Star of the weekend show though was undoubtedly Jack Wilshere. Arsenal fans have been aware of this boy for several years now and, over the two Emirates Cup matches, he announced himself to the wider football public in some style and earned himself the honour of being named "Man of the Match" on both days. On Saturday, he entered the fray at half-time and, during the second period, lit up what had been a fairly drab match. The next day, he again shone and netted himself a couple of goals in the victory over Rangers.

Inevitably, he received rave reviews from the media following the match and in this morning’s newspapers. In response to one moronic journalist who asked him if he was aiming to get into England’s World Cup team for next summer, the young man from Hertfordshire proved he had a sensible head on his shoulders by replying that he had to get into the Arsenal team first. Arsene Wenger was clearly delighted with Wilshere’s performances but was quick to try to neutralise any over-reaction by the press - and he was right to do so in order take unnecessary pressure and expectation off the lad’s shoulders. One wonders though what the manager's plans for this young man over the coming season really are.

Arsene Wenger is a man who is renowned hiding his true feelings and intentions behind what he might actually say to the media. When he says he didn’t see a controversial incident during a match, what he actually means is: “I don’t want to talk about what happened”. When he says the squad is strong enough and there is no pressure to add to it, what he actually means is: “Of course I am looking for new players but I am not going to announce to other clubs and players’ agents that I have a transfer kitty of millions burning a hole in my pocket so they can rack up their prices”. Hopefully, when he talks about not rushing Jack Wilshere along in his development what he actually means is: “I believed in Cesc Fabregas enough to throw him in at the deep-end and Jack Wilshere is definitely as special as him”.

And, make no mistake about it, Jack Wilshere is special and needs to be fast-tracked to first team action. Those who have seen him play against his own age group know that he has out-grown youth football and now needs the challenge of playing against full and seasoned professionals. He may not be in the starting-eleven every week but there is no doubt that he deserves a regular place on the bench. Over the past year, he has increased his physical strength and his low centre of gravity allows him to simply ghost past defenders. His vision and passing is instinctive and he is one of those players who seems very hard to dispossess. In terms of pure natural ability, he already surpasses most of the younger players that Wenger has been happy to give innumerable starts to over the past two or three seasons. Though pundits are often prone to over-exaggerate a young player as the “next big thing”, with Wilshere the hype is entirely justified and he more than deserves his chance this season.

So, despite there being plenty of positives over the weekend, (and, in fairness, a few negatives too – the defence still looked like it needed bolstering), the real test for this squad begins at Goodison Park in a fortnight. The Gunners have a tough start, particularly away from home, and need to hit the ground running. Still, the Emirates Cup proved to be a pleasant appetiser for the forthcoming season and there were signs that perhaps the club is not in the dire straits that some seemed to claim.

Amen to that about Arsene giving Wilshere his chance. I thought after he got his squad number last summer we would have seen a bit more of him, but it certainly makes sense to take it slow although his talent was obvious even then.

I was actually quite optimistic about this season with United losing Ronaldo, Chelsea getting older and not really strengthening and the Alonso/Mascherano saga at Liverpool. The sale of Toure has rattled me considering they need defensive depth and stability, but who knows, maybe he has a trick up his sleeve and maybe Vermaelen is a perfect replacement.

Also Silvestre is not good enough to be at this club and rather than let Traore spend a season elsewhere he needs to get his time to turn into Clichy2 and give them a bit of depth in at least on defensive spot, not to mention width.

Emirates Cup was indeed a pleasant apetiser for fans who have not seen the team in action for some time. The return of Rosicky, seeing Eduardo score, watching Arshavin's magic twice and most importantly the young talent Wilshere making monkeys out of Rangers defenders,it was pleasant indeed. But the question that begs is how all of these talents are going to be deployed effectively to win matches week in week out. What we have is bunch of clever midfielders combining to pass and move forward at will. But what we have not is the killer instincts to finish it off. While Arshavin and Eduardo have shown some of it, we need to have more of that to win games. When the midfield loses the ball, there is no one to stop the wave of attack from opposition. This is when we not only lose the rhythm, but lose the confidence. The defenders were often exposed and mayhem follows. We were lucky, Rangers and Madrid were not clinical in their finishing. To me it is the same. We are almost there

i do agree completely jack wilshere and Asharvin are the players to watch in this coming season
they have the pace and the talent on this young guys is alwesome keep it up,this is our season.
the transfer move of Patric Viera is welcomed as long he still got the energy we need two or even three more experienced players in the team to make it strong.

There is news that Arsenal intend to sell Senderos to Everton. That is great news because if Arsene is smart enough, he can pay a min amount (maybe around 12-15 million pound)to Everton for England defender Joleon Lescott and offload the inconsistent Senderos. This will strengthen Arsenal backlines and at the same time increases the number of England players in the team (to meet future FIFA quota). Everton will also be more willing to do business with Arsenal than Man City as Arsenal can provide them with a ready replacement (who is also an international player with EPL experience). At the same time, Everton can use the transfer fees to improve their team. So this will be a win-win situation for both teams and players. Hope Arsene will do some good business this time. The defence will need strengthening and it is time Arsenal has a good old English centre-back.

well i must say i was impressed by the attacking football we played in the emirates cup especially against rangers and wilshere has shown that he is ready to get more playing time with the first team. but i must say i was really disappointed with our defending in both games and we were lucky rangers and A. madrid werent very clinical with there fininshing. i think we need and experienced definsive midfilder(maybe veiria) to teach the likes of denilson and song how to support the defence and also link up with the attack. again the defence looked to keeping a high line and we kept getting cut out which shows it wasnt working. finally i think we need a striker that is clinical and can also problems for the defence with his skills and runs i think that will take the pressure off van persie and let him play with a little more freedom. wenger has to spend if he wants to get any trophy. we have the youth no doubt but they have to learn from the experienced players nad we dont have much of th

jack is very good to hapen to us this season, iand i know that wenger will do his best for thee team this saason, let's give our best suport.Eddie

thanks to wenger i like your corrage in the team,i see good result from the boys, more grace to your elbow, wish you all the best of the season, one last thing i want to make a suggestion it would be better if we have stronger, volatile and more exposed strikers who are very agressive when it comes to scoring goals, pls on behalf of all arsenal fans sing kalou for us,we need to be call champions again.thnaks

Posted by edison borbor on 08/04/2009

It could be better for wenger to give up sylvestre than to sell senderos. Arsenal is a very good team but wenger will have to buy another defender, a seasoned midfilder and a potent striker if for the the team to be in position to compete with the other big clubs.Otherwise, the club will be overtaken by othe clubs from below.

Posted by hassan kampala on 08/04/2009

Wilshere is good at finishing but still lacks the strenth to fight for the ball in addition Ashavin normally plays by taking the ball to the defenders thus a possibility of getting injured therefore need for a substitute stricker.

Good luch arsenal

fast and foremost, iwanna say big up to wenger for his patience on young talent.
As we can all see our squad, the defence still remains my worry, with the combination of Gallas and mikeal in the centre of defence we shall continue conceding many goals! iknow they got plenty of experience but age is catching up with them. all am saying is, lets try and get one defender and a holding midfielder.

The rest of the squad is a blessing, ijust love the kind of football this boys are playing, they all have inborn talents, oooh men look at the russian assasin,Croatian hitman, V.P, Fabregas, waooo! everyone is superb.

thanks guys
Iwish you all the best this season.

Thanks Wenger for spotting one of the best talents in the premier league- Solomon Kalou. I think he will be a good addition to the front line teaming up with RVP, Arshavin, Eduardo, Bendtner. But we need a defensive midfielder. About Jack, the boy is just good. Lets hope he transforms that form to the premiership.

Posted by Adrantino on 08/04/2009

Arsenal showed their potential with a bunch of young and dangerous kids...but thats not the strong aspect which will put them thru the whole season with youngsters that are particularly inexperienced on international level and tends to be inconsistent when under pressure...

Arsenal needs a couple of rock solid defenders which can be compared to the legendary back four Winterburn, Keown, Adam and Dixon...

Posted by Nordin B Hassan on 08/04/2009

i support arsene wenger fully and when i say that I will suggest to him to buy this player or to sell that player or to do this or that.when i say i support the manager fully, i should mean that I also believe in him fully including all his managerial actions...if he wants to buy whoever i will support him because i will believe that it is for the best of the team...if he doesnt then i also believe that he knows best that the available team os good enough for the season and i will beleive him and support him fully too

I do agree with most comments on this page, however, the lingering curiosity here is that last season most of us had the same exitement when the season was starting. we remember quite well what the end result was, with coach Wenger promising to boalster the squad. Its a new season, no major addition has taken place to re-enforce our shaky defence. Im not quite optimistic that with the lose of Toure that the defence is gonna be the same. I respect Wenger and have lots of admiration on what he is trying to acomplish, but on the same token this is a competition. For us to compete we need quality and we need experience too. Good mid-field and defence win championships and they must be complimented with some physicalities too. Melo would have such a nice addition but we missed on the opportunity, hopefully someone good might come up.

Posted by okpaikhian michael on 08/05/2009

Ithink the professor at the emirate knows it all. starlet like jack wilshere should study cesc fabregas this season and that means him having a place on the bench and fighting for a starting place week in, week out and help his confidence grow and also get derseved cameon to facilitate his sppedy growth. this is our season and by his grace we shall overcome.

Posted by Magembe on 08/05/2009

I think it's now time to stop yawning about trophies dryness.Arsene needs to bolster the defensive midfieder, one defender, and one clinical finisher.

Posted by toby on 08/05/2009

i think we have a good team but we need to strength our defence and midfieder buy bring in Patrick viera and colou in our team.

Posted by robert on 08/05/2009

wenger should buy an holding mid otherwise we will score goals and concede goals as well and that in football is going nowhere

Posted by OBITA jOHN OKIDI on 08/05/2009

I think arsenal is going to have ever best midfielders this season, looking at Thomas Rosicky, Fabrecas, Nasri, Jack Wilshere,Arshavin, with Theo Wolcott the predator up front, who else can scare these guys in the league

pls. arsene wenger, try and get us a fine defensive midfielder,a solid defender and a back up lethal sriker to the ones we already have.as for jack wikshere,he is simply fantastatic.i'm very if we put all these together arsenal will be simply unstoppable.

i also want to welcome rosicky back,we missed u so much and sure God will bless u for us.

cheers arsene u are doing a wonderful job at the emirates

Arsenal is a formidable team to watch but issue of failing to lift trophy for the past three season, give us concern. Arsene Wenger did not do the club well for not securing the talent like Martins,a striker with those great attributes. The coach, you realise that exprehence matters alot for the club to regain its former glory. Don't let us forget that people have been deliberating on which team will be replaced among the top four. pls will need to mend our fence so that regret will not come to the tail end of our thought.i.e"had I Know"

Posted by moses on 08/05/2009

i think we have a good team but however we need a defensive midfielder and an experienced defender.maybe viera ,kalou and chamack should come on board i think we will be invincible once again
go gunners go

I hope Arsene is reading the comments here and seeing the pain, longing and grear desire for something great to happen for MY beloved club ARSENAL.The suggestions on this page are great and i hope Arsene will heed and do bring in s superb C-defender(Lescott)c-forward(Kalou,Chamakh).Looking for great things this year.
GUNNERS TO THE WORLD!

Posted by clement Dakat on 08/06/2009

Nice reading the review on Jack Wilshere, while congratulating arsene on nurturing youthful talent, experience hands in the defensive midfield and centre back positions must and i mean "must"-be procured. Joleon Lescott or Brede are all fine options especially lescott in exchange for Senderos. My greatest worry- "a defensive midfielder". Do something Arsene.

Posted by Adebayo abidemi on 08/06/2009

Arsene Wenger look for mild fild now, look at it rosicky have gone to injury and also Nasri. who will play with Youth leader(Fabrigas)and thesame side to silvester, instead of allowing traore to go on loan make use of clichy and traore. had it been Traore is not on loan last season maybe Man U Will not beable to put us apart when Gibs fell apart and JS PARK Put ball into the net. consider all this factor that is what we call exprience as well. up gunners keep on GOD Of soccer is with us. Arsenal for live.

Posted by otukei joseph on 08/06/2009

just replace the injury prone rosisky and then get a good holding midfielder.

Posted by el-pablo on 08/06/2009

please,im tered of the drought,we need something to prove we are up to any task,a clinical finisher like chamachk,a good4 like vieira and one other central defender,we are good to go,please something this season

Posted by damion on 08/06/2009

i think wenger needs some more experience in the squad, but we still have one of the best squad in the leaque

Arsenal has the best team to win any trophy this season. go boys go and fire hard

Posted by ibnuM on 08/07/2009

yeah i agree with comment that state Gunners need physical prowess.
Here is the statistic that shows Arsenal's midfield height in 2004/2005 and 2009/2010
Just read the statistic:
2004/2005
Patrick Vieira(6ft3.5in0
Gilberto Silva(6ft3in)
Ray Parlour(6ft)
2009/2010
Cesc Fabregas(5ft10in)
Denilson(5ft11in)
Walcott(5ft9in)
Arshavin(5ft6in)
In boxing terms, that's like dropping from welterweight to lightweight-which is exactly what this current Gunners team are...
No one is denying that smaller, skilful ball players like Arshavin can be effective in English and European football. But recent history tells us that any team with serious ambitions cannot afford any more than one or two such players on the field.Even the all-conquering Barcelona said of last season would rarely field Messi and Bojan for any more than 20 minutes together.
So, here is my suggestions for Wenger to strenghten our squad:
DC-Brade Hangelaand
DM-Mahamadou Diarra
FC-Edin Dzeko

Posted by Nahabwe Ronald on 08/07/2009

Gunners 4 4.
I believe we are stronger than we were at this point last year and Wenger can add extra strength with Viera and Brede's acquisition. As for Rosicky,a little sympathy for him bt his number is covered.Hoping 4 the best season in recent years

Go Arsenal,Go Gunners.

Posted by Himmat Singh on 08/08/2009

jack wilshere is awesome! truely an Arsenal player indeed!

Posted by Edison.Mavunwa on 08/08/2009

The transfer window is almost coming to an end yet wenger is showing no sign of acquiring a defender. By the way the defence is now, its a disaster for Arsenal. Expect another trophyless season and we shall be out of the big four.

Posted by Amaitsa Livoyochi on 08/08/2009

Arsenal are dead in the water unless Wenger buys three expensive reinforcements RIGHT NOW. No one has ever won a championship with teenagers, and Wenger knows that. So why this wavering, and stuttering in buying? ACT NOW, Mr. Manager!

Posted by Genius on 08/08/2009

What Arsenal needs most is a good holding midfielder. Song is too slow that is my belief.

Posted by charles emeka on 08/08/2009

I surpise of what wernger is accutly doing now, because arsnal is going v-very down now.

We need players that will build up this tearm atleast 3or4 new player are needed now.
As you can see that toure and adeberyo has gone out and nasir is on inquel and edwardo and rosicky is not much fitness now.

I thing we have very big problem now.lets go for chrmack and de rossi and more for the replacement.

I plzz........ wernger.

Posted by JK on 08/08/2009

Hey if le profs getting kalou then what will happen to eduardo?
A extra striker would be good but what we really need is a rock solid holding midfield that can whack the opposition players like mahmadou diarra and vieira instead of people like denilson who pee in their pants in the game and cant play properly. we shld also get a solid defender like hangeland ( cheaper and good)

Posted by Lawson on 08/08/2009

lets face facts we don't have at all good solid defender that's the biggest problems and we still need at list a good finisher, wernger shuld buy a good central defender and list and good finisher, pls do get ur team solid defender and be wise and fast about your option, everybody wants to be a winner. The other clubs shld at list knw that we dnt have a good defender ,gunners just try and mke a really big lmpact now with some key players that will turn around the club.

Posted by spiral on 08/09/2009

Wenger needs to buy a central defender to replace Toure, a good difensive mid that can assist with goal scoring to replace Flamini and a top finisher to assist van persie, edwardo etc up front.

Posted by Steven, Jamaica on 08/09/2009

Arsenal on any given day can beat any given top team in the world. Whats lacking is the need for a genuine forward, accurate, & can beat the best goalie in the world, 1 that can strike the ball from 30 yds out. The Wenger passing game and 6 yards sure shooting style of play is good but there is the need for an all and out strike force, that shoots. Many of the game we lost to our opponents, we outplayed them to the bone and lost from a long range or deflected shot, ala Hull, Chelsea, Totenham and Man U games. We also need two sturdy defensive type midfielder ala Essein or Viera, our current crop is two flimsy in tackling, should be driving fear in the minds of the league's strikers. Finally sad to see Toure go, I thought he was the ultimate defender, we need a SOLID defender NOW. Spend some money, Arsene, get me 1 good defender, 2 defensive midfielders and 1 shooting from the hips striker, if not we'll be in the top 4 and not the top 2. Still Arsenal to the World as we say in Jamaica

Posted by kisepi on 08/10/2009

this season we are better considering we finished the last one in high tempo with the quality of sesc, arshavin, denilson.keep the faith in the boyz they will rock us this season

Posted by Kariuki ( Prof A W) on 08/10/2009

I very much agree with the observations made by most of the club fans.

It is high time the team technical bench addressed some of the issue that have caused us constant worries. It is no secret that ever since we lost Viera, Henry and sol cambel, the taem has not been able to mount a serious challange to win back any cup. the main reason being we do not have enough bench power to compliment the first team especially when injuries occour.

Our respected manager and his team must this season realise that we also need some sliverware come the end of the season.

We were lucky to maintain position four last season thanks to a lack of consistency from Aston Villa but who knows what Man City has in the bagh this time round!

Posted by elite taiwan/not china on 08/11/2009

it's not a platitude that arsenal could not afford to hold on to the opportunities of bringing a towering defender.two holding midfielder in to the current squard as the tranfer tradings are still ongoing.and then would be punished in the standings this season go mr.wenger!

Posted by asuquo on 08/12/2009

I commend wenger for beautiful football played by Arsenal but we need trophy. I want him to buy central defender and defensive mid-fielder plus one very smart attacker to compliment the present team and I believe with this, Arsenal FC will win many trophies this season. I wish Arsenal the very best of luck this season. Go the Gunners and win honours and trophies for your numerous supporters in Nigeria and the whole world.

Posted by francis kigondu on 08/12/2009

although i agree with the praises to the team prof must see to it that we get silverware this season we are tired of being called the club of vision 2030 in kenya. Please wenger buy some seriouis defender silvester is a disaster and now toure is gone and please get a lethal hard fighting striker the other three have rooney, drogba and torres get us one tough striker and a holding midfilder to support fabulous fabregas otherwise lets support the team and our manager never say die. This could yet be our season

Posted by Robert Mugabe on 08/12/2009

After watching Valancia march, I released that our defence is leaky.

We need to but a defensive midifielder at the same time get Toure's replacement, otherwise it might be difficult to compete with big teams.

Arsenal Management should take our comments seriously, otherwise the club my be left to the owners alone.

Fabregas should not leave the club now, this is the time we need him most, given the fact that He has stayed in the club for some time and loves the club

Posted by Simon on 08/14/2009

Lets try and sign someone Gunners! Take a look at Wesley Sneijder or Rafael van der Vaart Mr. Wenger, there are numerous big players looking for a good club to go to! Huntelaar would have been an option as well, but he has been signed now as well. Personally Sneijder would be an amazing add to the team, and as Real Madrid has gone on this crazy spending spree it gives teams like Arsenal the oppurtunity to sign players that they put to waste.

Come on Gunners, we can win the title this year!
