Arsenal began their season in scintillating style with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park. The players turned what looked to be a potentially tricky opening fixture into a cakewalk and sent out a message of intent to their doubters.
The game was effectively over by half-time courtesy of three goals before the break and the Gunners put the Toffeemen well and truly to the sword with three further strikes in the second half. Louis Saha's injury time reply was barely consolation for the home fans, most of whom had left the stadium long before the final whistle.
Last week, I suggested that the players needed to hit the ground running in the early games of the season. Yesterday, they did just that. It was a magnificent performance. The team attacked with fluency and style and they defended in numbers. The new formation that had been trialled during the pre-season looked to be highly effective as Everton were simply cut to ribbons by wave after wave of crisp, incisive passes and tireless Arsenal running.
The pick of the goals was arguably the first by Denilson. Some excellent work by Nicklas Bendtner on the right saw the Dane beat two men and then slide the ball inside to Cesc Fabregas. The Arsenal captain simply helped it on its way into Denilson's path and the Brazilian hit a beautiful curling shot into the top corner of the net. It was a goal that would have lit up any game.
The second and third strikes came from the central defensive pairing of Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas. Both players managed to lose their markers at set-pieces and exacted the maximum punishment on the Everton defence by heading home with strength and accuracy.
With the game effectively over as a contest by the break, the only concern for Arsenal fans was that the players might take their foot off the gas in the second half and allow the home team back into the match. As it was, there was nothing to worry about. The Gunners were even better in the second half and added three further goals - two from Fabregas and one from Eduardo.
Last season Everton had a decent tilt at breaking into the top four and only finished nine points behind the Gunners. Yesterday though, particularly in the second half, the gulf in class looked far wider than last season's standings suggested. The home team were outplayed in every department. To have said that they were made to look ordinary would be generous. They were actually made to look a complete shambles by an Arsenal side that passed the ball the way Arsene Wenger's teams are renowned for and took their chances with merciless efficiency.
It would be hard to pick out individual players for particular praise because it really was a superb all-round team performance. That said, early impressions of Thomas Vermaelen were extremely favourable. He was forceful in the tackle and displayed excellent timing and positional awareness. Though he is only six feet tall, he showed plenty of competitiveness in the air even against taller opponents. His goal just before half-time was the perfect way to announce his arrival but fans will be more heartened and impressed by what he brought to the defence.
As fabulously enjoyable as yesterday's performance was, it is important not to get too carried away with the result. Certainly, the players sent a strong message to the critics who suggested they would only be making up the numbers in the Premier League this season but nothing is won on the first day of the season. It was a performance to savour but already thoughts are moving ahead to Celtic Park on Tuesday night and the first leg of the Champions League qualifying round.
The Celts will be going into the match on the back of an impressive away win of their own this weekend and the Gunners will have to show the utmost professionalism and a steely attitude to get a result in what will be a cauldron of an atmosphere in Glasgow.

I think people should learn how to give wenger the benefit of doubt. I know many arsenal haters will say that that is just one game and arsenal are yet to get disappointment but please with team work and doing what is supposed to be done, i know the team can go far and i believe wenger knows what he is doing. I personally believe his project is right. Arsenal could have won that match square because the team followed what the coach told them. Forget about the big name stars.

arsenal always do well when they have a fit squad...but if we are hit by injuries, especially to one of the back 4 or cesc, we will not be competitive...holding midfielder is a must in those situations...aw must know this...if he doesn't get that signing, we will not add silverware and will lose cesc next season to barca, period

I believe in Arsene. I believe in his project, i believe in his philosophy. Spreading cash like confettis Ala Man. City doesn't do good for the spirit of the game.
And why are we the gooners so impatient? Winning cannot be all. Look at the way we play game years in years out. Some of them sound like they would rather play as ugly as Newcastle yet win. I don't believe in that. That is just not us "Arsenal". We play the beautiful game like the way it is meant to be.
Yes I want to see the Gunners grab a silverware or two, but I am not willing to sacrifice the beatutiful game they play under AW just so that they win.
Its time we all realize and appreciate the philosophy that is being practiced at Arsenal.
Go Gooners.

What of if we dont suffer any of those injuris as u imagined. Though u made a point, you sound so emphatic like a prophet of doom. I have absolute trust in What Arsene Wenger is doing. You should know that If wenger does not see any need to buy, he will not buy despite your doomsday prophesy all you arsenal haters.

Great result for our side, commiserations to the Toffees. The season is long and this was only the first favorable result, so fellow gooners, enjoy it without gloating then put it away. I agree with Wenger's conservative approach to the management of a soccer team; so whilst not disparaging those equipping via the checkbook, it's good to see some responsible planning and execution, which takes time, but can have a far more rewarding outcome.

It was a great game and it says a lot about the good changes in squad and some character maturation. Nick Bendtner actaully participated in creating a meaningful team work! He may be turning into en effective player. Arshavin, though, still has some way to go to understand the team work. Perhaps summer squad cleansing boosted the morale.
But, make no mistake that our current team is like a hard but thin shell. As pressure increases, it will crack at some point and we need support in mid field and central defense to fix the cracks. Arsene's lectures in the dressing room only work to some level and it does not work consistently.

This is the perfect start, this is not only a win, but a big confident win. Unlike the other "big name" teams suffering a win ,the Gunners were in total control of every dept, defence, midfield and attack.
Do you know how we got 6 goals? its because for the first time we saw a gap and took strike, unlike previously when the midfield used to work so hard just to feed the ball to Ade (mr. monebags)and he is off side or loses the ball.
Gunners can only get stronger from here, injuries happen to evry club, its how we cope with it and the other players brought in have oppportunities to prove themselves.
There is no reason why we cant win it this season, Go Arsenal.

it was really unbelievable play from arsenel, and this is a warning to liverpool, chelsea, manu, and mancity.

Warning to the other teams? Its just the first match, and it looks like you all have won the league. Everton was clearly having trouble with the International week, and the team has been affected by Lescott's incident. Are you sure arsenal can be on form on all the games?

I watched the EV Vs ARS game while seated between vocal MANU supporters they were upbeat we were going to loose. But when the goals flowed in they kept quiet, they could not believe the goalline at some. They left the game before the end. One of them said we might have erred in ignoring arsenal by following blindly the bookmarkers

Arsenal FC, the best Football club in the UK, SIMPLE.
What they need to be champion this season, is to demolish less teams like sunderlands, wolve, burnley, bolton, and not to concentrate on the big teams. From the previous seasoons, it shows that beaten the less teams is the key to the title, less draws

The sentiment comes from the fact that Arsenal put a lot of time, money and erffot into developing an undoubtedly good talent, but when it came to the crunch, it was his failure to really apply himself that let him down. He had the attitude that because he bossed it in the reserves, it was only a matter of time before he was in the first team. Sadly, being able to maraud through defences at reserves level, largely thanks to a size advantage, does not translate into doing that in the Premiership. What is required is a willingness to work hard on and off the pitch, not a fancy car, a daft haircut, a bunch of followers on twitter, and a too-cool-for-school attitude. 0 0

About
Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
