Arsenal rounded off their season in comfortable style on Sunday with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Stoke City at Ashburton Grove. Though nothing was riding on the match, it was a pleasing way for the team to sign off after a torrid couple of weeks.
It was heartening too that the crowd, the manager and players all headed off into the summer on good terms with each other. Throughout the game, Arsene Wenger’s name was sung loudly all round the stadium and any residual friction arising from the annual shareholders’ meeting appeared to be forgotten. The consensus seems to be that Wenger is still the man for the job but with the proviso that a few changes are made in the close-season. To his credit, the manager himself has acknowledged this in the interviews he has given so all we can do is sit back and wait to see what moves he makes before the new season kicks off again in August.
Either side of the victory against Stoke, Arsenal fans were treated to two fabulous performances by the Arsenal under-18s as they beat their Liverpool counterparts both home and away to lift the prestigious FA Youth Cup 6-2 on aggregate. A crowd of over 33,000 turned up at Ashburton Grove to see the first leg last Friday and they were royally entertained with a 4-1 win. The young Arsenal players showed speed, skill and appetite and after going in 2-1 up at half-time blew their visitors away in the second period. Particularly impressive were the midfield pairing of Jack Wilshere and Francis Coquelin, who, between the two of them, controlled the match and up front Sanchez Watt showed pace and skill and scored the goal of the night.
The return leg at Anfield on Tuesday night might not have been quite as dazzling as the home match but, nonetheless, the boys still did enough to win 2-1 with relative ease. The celebrations that followed the final whistle showed what picking up this trophy meant to the players. They were already champions of the Premier Academy League and taking the FA Youth Cup as well showed what an exceptional group of players the Gunners have on their hands at this age group. Academy Director Liam Brady and his staff have been working with most of these boys for eight years now and though producing top class players is the main objective at this level rather than winning trophies, it must have been a moment of great pride for the Arsenal legend to see the players deliver both the league and the cup.
As wonderful as it was to see such a talented group of young players in action, most of them clearly have a long way to go before they are seen making regular starts either in Arsenal’s first-team or elsewhere in the Premier League. Many of them are still young enough to be eligible for next season’s FA Youth Cup! The feeling is though that in the decade or so that Liam Brady has been at the Academy’s helm this is the strongest crop of players that have ever been brought through. It would be very surprising if several of them did not get onto the first-team scene in the next few years.
So, despite the disappointments that have befallen the club this season, there are a few reasons to be cheerful going into the summer. The now regular first preseason friendly at Barnet is less than two months away. It is not long before we can start dreaming about what next season might hold. Let’s hope that the manager does what he needs to do in the transfer market as early as possible so we can really look forward to the middle of August.

The club need to FIRE the manager, he is nothing but a total waste of time. If he still coaches next season i will not support the team i love and will encourage others to do the same fire him now and get a coach like murino from chelsea and buy a few more quality players

I also hope Arsene gets the job done on the transfer market. I'm no expert, but these are my suggestions for realistic transfers:
Centre half -- Buy Wheater and Metzelder to compete w/ Toure & Gallas. Sell Silvestre (& Senderos permanently).
Midfield -- Buy Parker to start alongside Cesc (Barry & Alonso are likely too expensive); Song to rotate in to develop. Loan out Denilson. Sell Diaby.
Forwards -- Sell Adebayor. No need to buy unless it's Villa for a cut price (unlikely).
The main change I'd love to see from Wenger is changing the long-ball/hold-up game we resort to w/ Adebayor and go back to a dynamic, quick-passing player-movement-based attack. We cannot break down disciplined defenses because we are too predictable. We need to have players move around more, like Barca at the UCL Final. That will open spaces for our scorers. Our forwards, except Adebayor & Bendtner, fit such a scheme well -- Eduardo, RVP, Arshavin, Cesc, Nasri, Walcott, Rosicky, Vela could all flourish.

Nicely put Young and JJL. I feel Arsene should target the following players:
Defence: Hangeland from Fulham, Metzelder or even Lucio from Bayern. Sell Silvestre, Senderos.
Mid field: Obi Mikel from Chelsea, Work with Diaby to strengthen his game. Sell nobody in this department.
Forward: No addition. Just have the players sharpen their finishing. Work with Bendtner on how to move around wit the ball. He is not a good dribbler.
Barcelona have put the doubting folks to shame. Quick passing player movement wins big. Ask Brazil. Arsene should stick with his plan.

Lol @ Ryan.
You can go and support Barca or Inter then.
I can't understand people who say they love the team and then say they won't support it.
 |
Posted by JJL on 05/29/2009
If you're a Gooner, then you stick by the team no matter what (though you'd also see Arsene staying as a good thing -- Ryan just doesn't remember the good ol' Rioch days).
I feel Hangeland will be overpriced -- he's had one good season, looks a player, but Fulham will want big money. Metzelder is surplus at Real, & Wheater was relegated -- both more physical than Gallas. Metzelder has experience but not pace. Wheater is young & has a long bright future. Both affordable. Bayern won't sell Lucio.
Diaby is rubbish. He pulls the heartstrings by looking like Vieira, but he is too sloppy in tackles & has poor positioning. Song can tackle & is good on the ball, but lacks experience. Parker is affordable & seasoned, can pass & tackle. Sort of an English Alonso, though admittedly not as good. Then again, he'd only cost half as much. Mikel is no more proven than Song.
I actually think Bendtner can dribble. He just has the worst first touch I've ever seen. I'd prefer RVP & Eduardo.

I think, we need more people who not only can create a beautiful pass, but also able to dribble the ball like Arshavin and Walcott..we need to adapt to fast counter-attack style like Chelsea and ManU did..

Arsene needs to stick to the plan, but GO BACK to what made his teams work - buy a holding midfielder - period. Going forward they'll be ok, but you need muscle behind Cesc, and they need to be able to pass. Selling Vieira, then Edu, then Gilberto, then Diarra.... the answer is not Song or Diaby - you need a Mikel, Alonso, Senna, remember Graveson from Everton - buy one of these guys, no matter what the price. Then you don't have to buy anyone else.

arsenal needs to buy at least two central defenders and one defencive mid-field player, two midfield players, with two strikers and letting Adebayor star from the flanks to improve his dribbling skills and give him more pace and confidence.let Senderos come back sell Sevestre,Rosisky,Diaby loan out Denilson. lets get Klbh back....

I am an arsenal fan from Tanzania. Arsene should buy three players. One sharp and quick striker like David Villa after selling Adebayor; a strong and experienced midfielder like Alonso and One tall experienced and phisically well built central defender like Hangeland after selling Silvester as he has no chance for arsenal success next season. Otherwise we will never get any siverware next season taking into consideration what the others among the "big fours" are planning to buy.

I'm an Arsenal fan,i do believe in arsene and i know he knows the flavor we need in the team. we need to sign three players- 1 central back(ricardo cavalho)or (Onyewu) , defensive half(xabi Alonso) to support cesc and a striker like santa cruz.

looking at the season, we were left empty handed for some obvious reasons:
goalkeeping: a few games to take note of (1) against hotspur 4-4 goalkeeping mistake (2) lost to chelsea FA cup semi thanks to fabianski. Was our goalkeeping the best? why not?
def: omg! we are contenders of the top 4 premier league and we have this kind of defensive blunders? it's either your are above the opponent's forward or you are not. most of the time we are the latter one.
midfield: sometime's they are clueless what's happening. try this. sack all the midfielders and leave cesc one-man-show in the middle. will he make it? we are contenders when arshavin + cesc brought light to the game.
forwards: the likes of eto, henry and messi scoring over 90 goals combined is a little profound isn't it? we needed that, nevermind the defensive blunders whatsoever, the forward's job is to make sure that we're scoring more than we are conceeding.
my penny of thoughts.

also, i think our comments matters... yes we are not involved in the strategy and coaching and stuffs but then again, we are the ones who pay to watch the game. we pay to wear arsenal jerseys. more or less we are inclined to buying "nike" products since we see it week in week out on arsenal jersey. These are the $$$ used to build a better team.
i am not trying to say that wenger did a lousy job. the whole team need to stand together and work their hearts out. i was wondering, weren't they paid handsomely for playing? then do a better job - get results! sometimes its not the silverware that matters but look at it, how did we lost to chelsea in the FA cup semi-finals? did we lose to a better team, yes. but did we lost with our heads held high? NO! it was crappy defensive work. what about champions league? were we champions material? the whole midfield and forward were completely lost - on both home and away. even if we win it, we are still not champions material - no magic whatsoever.

hi. a note from Malaysia. i think the top priority would be defensive midfielder. that's where Arsenal lacked last season. please get Alonso at all cost. or anyone with English football experience. no time to do experiment anymore on this area. do not sell Denilson. still have more years to come from him. if got more budget, please get a good central defender. I really like Vidic. that's all Arsenal need. just keep the team together since they're getting better but lack experience.

it's a good thing that we fans have this medium to express our views for the best way to see our beloved ARSENAL move forward after all said and done we need just experience in the sense that ppl like giggs, neville gary and van der sar are the spine at united so we shouldn't have done away with vieira, henry, pires et al.we can still get better it's just time that will tell as for the new signings....it's the gaffer that determines who comes to the emirates.

if the truth be told, Arsenal simply need to sell Sylvester (i never understood why he was bought in the first place), Senderos and Bentner. They are all surplus. As replacements get Faye, Eto and a good holding midfielder.
Arsene Wenger should stay. He just needs resources

I am an Arsenal fan from HK. I follow most of the games starting from 2002. One of the major problem for the team is that they often need to adapt to different style of playing when there are continuously a few fisrt team players on the injury list. The more serious problem to the team is that the midfield players do not provide enough coverage to the defender. The whole team waste more time to gain the possession back and in turn seriously affect the fluency of attacking. DO NOT trust Denilson can play the role as a defensive midfielder! We need a physically strong and tall player at that position. Diaby is already a good choice, if he is told to do such simple job as tackle and header, but not creative passing.

I don't understand people's obsession with any defensive midfielder at all costs. While I think we should get one, there are different kinds. Alonso, Mikel, Gravesen, and Senna are completely different players. Alonso is like Carrick, an okay tackler but awesome on the ball, great positioning and passing. Mikel and Senna are similar; high work-rate, good tacklers, penetrating on offense. Gravesen WAS a slow but physically dominating intimidator.
Our system could use someone like Alonso, certainly. Gravesen (or someone like him) would not fit at all. Senna we could use b/c he is experienced and can take free kicks, but he is too old now and just had a major injury. I don't understand how supposed Arsenal supporters are so in love with Mikel. I've never seen the lad win a match (Essien in the same role has, many times). He's young and has talent, but hardly the messiah people are making him out to be.
If we can't get Alonso, I say we get Parker. Experienced, cheap, can pass and tackle.

Hey goooooners sup pple, So much talk about defence we have Gallas Toure Gael and Sagna who are u goin to sit down for the better part of the season? If Arsene is to bring in anybody bring back Senderos hes done well at AC
Maybe a holding midfielder will do us good but Song is strong on the ball a good passer and an excellent tackling ability and the Russian sansation is juss sansational. RVP ,Adebayour combined have the class to kill off any team. By the way Tomas is comming back so only holding midfielder or no one at all.

Adebayor is a world class striker. Selling him would be a mistake... he is the complete package with technical and physical ability. You boys are dreaming if you think there is another striker of his quality who can be had with Arsenal's resources.
van Persie is probably the one who needs to go, in favour of a speedier, less injury prone striker. vagner love anyone?
Diaby and Denilson are still young... again, foolish if anyone thinks that they have reached their peak potential at 23 and 21 years of age. Not everyone becomes world class at 21 like messi and fabby...
need a tall, physical centreback and a screening defensive midfielder (preferably one that likes to tackle... sorry xabi)

Given the peanuts that Wenger works with at Arsenal,Mourinho, ferguson,Anceloti and co would all run away.Wenger doesnt control Arsenal bank accounts but he makes lemonade from the lemons they give him instead of crying for oranges.Lest you forget,Inter milan,Real madrid and even liverpool with all their spending didnt reach as far as Arsenal went in the champions league.
For all crying for Wenger's sacking, perhaps what they should do is re examine thier own understanding of the Arsenal they claim to support rather than question the transfer activities of the a man with a masters degree in Economics, the man who made the world know Nicholas Anelka ( a bargain 500,000 pounds buy ),Patrick Viera,Kolo Toure,Cesc Fabregas and brought George Weah from Africa and turned him into WORLD PLAYER OF THE YEAR,EUROPEAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR AND AFRICAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR!!

i love aresenal, and i think we should be a little bit more understanding.
i think wenger has done a great job, with the resources he has at hand. his hands are tied when it comes to making big money buys, and he is also reluctant to buy more established (older) players, as he feels he owes it the young ones that they have first team football to play. we have a young squad, and must be patient. having said that, i also get impatient with some of the young ones, esp bendtner.. that guy can't pass for nuts, and has as bad a first touch as me.. haha..
in any case, lets hope that everyone in our squad can stay fit next season.. and everything will be better.. with rosicsky, eduardo, rvp, arshavin fit. we stand a good chance.. of improving from this season!

for me, we cannot blame wenger for the player transfer.we'll know that arsenal's board is dumb-fool!they give wenger limited transfer fund to buy quality player and we know that wenger cannot buy the quality player with a little fund.and then, the board highly expected that arsenal's can competed for the premier league and champion league title.what a fool!with the young-non-experienced players and rejected players like silvestre, they think arsenal's can competed with highly invested teams MU,chelsea and liverpool?no way man!no way!it nonsenses!see what happen when the game played with these 3 teams.arsenal's players did not qualified for those titles!in other words, arsenal's are hopeless!as a gunners die-hard fan,i'm really sad and shame...hope next season the board will allow wenger to buy more quality player especially defender and striker and hopefully they sell rubbish like silvestre and adebayor to make sure arsenal's back to the competition...

Arsene is a God amongst managers ... the younger fans seem to forget what kind of profound impact he has had on our Club (GO GOONERS!!). He is not going anywhere and should retire as our manager... nuff said.
Its so easy to sit back and think we know what the club needs... pls... let the MAN decide for us. He will address the defence (Vermaelen has been signed apparently; sell Silvy & maybe Gallas), and maybe buy a midfileder (i am willing to be patient for Song and Denilson rather then sign a vet... they both showed promise at young age this past season). Striker situation is a bit dodgy... do we sell Ade and bring in Obafemi? What abt RVP? I think we should keep Robin he showed so much poise this past season. Eduardo might have to go as there is no place for him since Arshavin arrived. What other strike options do we have? The young Gun Jay Simpson showed promise do we bring him in for a chance at 1st-team glory? He and Walcott can form the future of Arsenals and Englands forward

I am an Arsenal fan from Mombasa - Kenya. Our couch Arsen Wenger is great and deserves respect.
What I can advise is - We should scout for one good physical defender and two goal minded very sharp and quick thinking strickers. Lets buy this time, please Mr. Wenger.
Most of the time our strickers run out of ideas and end up loosing very good balls.
Arsenal is a very sharp team and at the start of every season it flourishes but with a few injuries, the team takes the receiving end seat.
Wenger should think of a very good substitute bench like the Chelsea one.....
I support comments by other dieharts that an Arsenal fan should always support the team no matter what happens......

I dont understand why people keeps saying we need a striker, we scored 68 goals this season but we conceded around 40 and thatz why we came 4th not second or first.. what we need is some great defenders and defensive mid fielder.. buying the likes of Eto is waste of money in my opinion. and if we need fast strikes then theo wilcott is the man tht wenger shoud train. he has all the potentials. oh and let Ade go if he wants to, if we did okay without henry thn I think we will do fine with ADE..

Without a question I believe we need to win trophies, but have to do it prudently, I listen to the news and I hear LFC are in deep financial trouble but the have no new stadium yet, so if they colapse today with all the trophies they have won in the last 5 yrs, what then. We need a midfielder I would prefer alonso, but I hav faith in both denilson and diaby, but what we really need is the football luck, coz we create mor chances than any other in the primiership and we have in the last five seasons, so if weve scored half then we would win all, so I pray for luck and less injuries, wenger is the man

I am an asernal fan from Uganda. Denilson can have the job done but is too soft for the English game we need a replacement here. Remember Viera in that position. We need to stop the leakage there. Adebayor is good but sure he should know that the entire team has done all the passing, he only need to shoot in the six yard box. When will one ever get a goal in a match when your top finisher has 70% of the attacking time passing the ball backwards. It is high time he left! That number is for sharp shooters! It is goals that win games, passing ball not with standing.Silvestre in our defence? Please Wenger fix this one next season for all of us!

There's been a lot of talk about bringing in a holding midfielder, and i agree the need is there, but what about bringing up one of our defenders (either Toure or Djourou) to fill that role? We're being linked with a few central defenders in the press, and I agree its a good thing, but I'd love to see Gallas/Djourou and a new defender (someone who is good in the air) at the back and Toure pushed forward a little. He's been a valuable servant to the club, has the pace and positioning sense to work well in the center of the park, and has a decent enough attacking mind to pair well with Cesc. Most everyone agrees that Gallas and Toure do not pair well together, but each is a great player in his own right... they are just too similar in style to be effective together. Toure to central defensive midfield might be the simple answer. We think of him as a central defender, but he started his career much further up the pitch. Maybe its time for him to move back up...

I absolutely agreed with Carter. Let pair Vermalaen with Gallas in Defence and move Toure to defensive midfield. He is a battler, a good dribbler, a good football carrier and he can run as well.. His training as defender has taught him to be focussed. This is a simple solution. I am tired of other clubs' fans thumping their noses at me as a Gunner fan.
