After a glorious night at Ashburton Grove on Wednesday when Arsenal coasted to victory over Villareal and booked their place in the semi-final of the Champions League, it was back down to earth with a very big bump yesterday at Wembley as Chelsea overturned a one-goal deficit and dumped the Gunners out of the FA Cup. Defeats in semi-finals are always the hardest to take and it was a desperately disappointing outcome.
Many supporters arriving at Wembley yesterday were surprised to hear the team Arsene Wenger had picked. Though playing five in midfield has now become an accustomed formation when facing Chelsea, the absence of both Nasri and Arshavin was somewhat perplexing, particularly when the latter is cup-tied in the Champions League. Still, Wenger’s selection appeared to be justified when the team made a very positive start and took the lead through Theo Walcott.
Unfortunately, rather than break Chelsea’s spirit, the goal only served to wake them up. Their equaliser just before half-time was largely attributable to weak Arsenal defending though. A long ball was hit forward to Florent Malouda on the edge of the area. Emmanuel Eboue was slow to react and close him down. When he finally did so, he showed Malouda inside rather than forcing him wide and the Frenchman fired a fierce shot that beat Fabianski at his near post – something which is considered a cardinal sin for goalkeepers.
From then Chelsea got stronger and stronger and the Gunners struggled to impose themselves on the game. Arsenal’s only potent striking threat was posed by Theo Walcott. Elsewhere, Robin Van Persie was anonymous stuck out on the left and Abou Diaby seemed more intent on giving the ball away than getting himself into the sort of advanced positions where he can be a danger. Most irritating though was the performance of Emmanuel Adebayor. Playing as a lone striker, his level of effort was shameful. Rather working to create space and make runs as an outlet for the midfield players, he sauntered around for most of the afternoon waiting for the game to come to him. His contribution was negligible and his substitution came way too late.
The absence of Manuel Almunia, William Gallas, Johan Djourou, Bacery Sagna and Gael Clichy in defence was a huge concern before the game and, with a second defensive shambles presenting Chelsea with their winner, we can only wonder what might have been had injury not struck down so many key players in the Arsenal backline. With only a few minutes remaining on the clock a hopeful Chelsea punt forward saw Didier Drogba shrug off Mikael Silvestre all too easily. Then, crazily, Fabianski came rushing out of his area in a vain attempt to close down the Ivorian but only served to make his task simpler as Drogba nudged the ball past him and slotted it into the empty net. Three times in the past two matches Fabianski has rushed out of his area in this fashion to try to clear balls that he has no right to claim. The young Pole might show signs of being a half-decent shot stopper but he still has a lot to learn about composure.
With the strains of Chelsea’s Cup Final song ringing in their ears, the Arsenal fans trudged away with their chins on the floor at the end of the game. Many believed that the FA Cup was the best chance of silverware this season but those dreams were shattered by a strange team selection, an under-par performance and two moments of terrible defending. It was all a very far cry from the joyous scenes at Ashburton Grove on Wednesday night – and now the Champions League is the last avenue to winning a trophy open to the Gunners.
Any nerves that Arsenal were going to fluff their lines against Villareal were soon settled by Theo Walcott’s first-half goal. From there, the Gunners never looked in any real danger of losing the tie. The second goal provided by Adebayor broke the Spaniards spirit and Robin Van Persie’s penalty put the outcome beyond any doubt. All that remained for the crowd was to celebrate the victory and give Robert Pires a rapturous reception on his return to North London.
Manchester United now await Arsene Wenger’s men in the semi-final and it looks like it is going to be a titanic clash. United might will be favourites on form, but they have struggled against Arsenal at Ashburton Grove in recent years, so it is essential that the Gunners come away from the first leg at Old Trafford with the tie still very much alive.
Before then it is back to Premier League business. With no time to lick their wounds after Saturday’s disappointment at Wembley, the team travel to Anfield on Tuesday night to face Liverpool whose recent league form has been imperious. Hopefully, some of the absentees from Arsenal’s depleted defence will be back in contention and with doubts over the fitness of Steven Gerrard for the Reds, it is a game that the Gunners have to face positively. Though a healthy cushion exists between fourth place and Aston Villa in fifth, there are still plenty of points to play for and the job of qualifying for next year’s Champions League is by no means complete.
As deflating as the defeat to Chelsea was this Arsenal team now has to show its mettle and pick itself up for the Liverpool game. Important matches come thick and fast at this time of the year but if this set of players are as good as Arsene Wenger maintains then this test of physical endurance, mental strength and the will to win is one they better get used to facing.

one wonders why arsene decided to make such an improper selection it was as if he had decided to loose the even before it started, i mean what was arshavin doing on the bench with an ineffective player like d iaby on the pitch. there is only one person to blame moreso when he decided to make the change so late in the game

The sole reason we were able to cover our obvious weakness at the back agaist Viallreal was due to fact that we started defensive minded Song who pressured the midfielders into bad passes and physically he intimidated them. Our selection for midfield was overpowered from the beginning. Ballack was shrugging off Denilson and Diaby like they were children. OOps! I'm sorry, they are children. When playing against grown men with vast international experience, you must counter with the same. (arshavin, Song, Nasri). We had no width on the left side with RVP. He should own a defender like Ivanovic!!Arsene needs to admit he got this all wrong.

Poor team selection for the FA Cup. 1 of 2 trophys that were in the hunt for and he doesnt even use the players brought in to do the job.

this is the most stupid selection by wenger.why did he use diaby.diaby is not a player for arsenal.

I dont understand the selection either (Arshavin should have been selected over Diaby) but we must not look away at what has been Arsenal's downfall most of the season: thier defence. I thought Eboue did an horrendous job covering the right side of the back 4. He was constantly attacking and made little effort to backtrack. Becuase of him Malouda was able to score the 1st goal. As for the centre backs, Silvestre and Toure just did not have the pace to lock down Drogba. And Gibbs, as promising as he may seem, is not ready to play against giants like Chelsea. OVerall, a good learning experience for the Gunners, but this loss could spell the end for Van Persie and Toure - both of whom have made it known their desire to win trophies for the club.

The moment I saw the team selection, I knew Arsenal is not going to win the match and sad to say my prediction came true. I have great respect for Arsene Wenger as an astute manager and coach but I simply couldnt agree with his choice of players for the match against Chelsea.
Chelsea is a very physical team and fast on the counter attack. Denilson and Diaby to me are just too weak and not compose. Their passes were bad and they were falling like bowling pins throughout the match. Since the departure of Patrick Viera, Hleb, Flamini, Rosicky and Fabregas had been doing a great job in the midfield but just when they began to gel, Hleb and Flamini left Arsenal. The current Arsenal midfield is just too weak against physical teams in the EPL and this is the reason for Arsenal failure to win against weaker but physical teams throughout the EPL season.
Arshavin, Nasir Samri, Song and Fabregas would have been a better choice but sadly Arsene Wenger got it wrong on that crucial day.

Look!!! What have I said was shown in the match against Liverpool tonight. 4-4 draw had shown what I see in the Gunners. Arshavin and Nasri were there. At least 4 goals by Arshavin contributed enough.
Next opening season of 2009-2010 window Wenger must look for at least three new best defenders and a good replacement goal keeper. Thats the only thing he has to do. All other areas are perfect and no key player can be sold.
For this season balance games of BPL & UECL...Gunner has to make full utilisation on whatever resources available. With full committment, spirit and support by the players and the fans....I know Gunners could go for the Title or at least maintain their performance and unbeatable BPL games record with currently as today 19 games.. Go ARSENAL....YOU CAN DO IT !!!

I just saw the liverpool vs. arsenal game and it only proved that Wenger got it all wrong in the FA Cup... forget Arshavin's 4 goals and Nasri movements and passes... For a night Song looked like the giant Flamini that got his move to Milan by chasing and taking back every ball in the game

Why wouldn't he pick Arshavin?
I know hindsight is 20/20 and all that, but he comes out in the very next game and scores all 4 goals.
Trying to tell you something Mr. Wenger?

I think forgetting the big picture as to why he selected the players he did. obviously if he didn't have confidence in them to get the job done then he would of sat them on the bench. The biggest picture is champions league so excuse me if he didn't all the world class players on the pitch to satisfy some of us, but i believe resting other players while giving others the challenge of being able to execute a task is really important. We all burn out after playing numerous games and as a coach one must always keep that in mind.

i wonda when wenger will ever take FA and Carling cup seriously.
i wish he reads all these comments.
please wenger STOP MAKING OUR SOUL BLEED.Always play to win and not playing those players who could not deliver.
what is Ashevin,SONG doing in the bench?
Diaby? i hate his style of play.
one more thing mr. wenger, always tell you boys to shoot the ball from outside the eighteen-yard box, and not dribling till you drible the goal-keeper.
this is very painfull loosing at this stage, mr wenger.

Wenger surprises me sometimes... where was Song and Arshavin who is cuo-tied for Champions League? What is Denilson always doing in the Arsenal line up? theonly time you see him is when he commits a foul or gives the ball to an opponent and puts the defence in confusion. the FA Cup was more important than the match agaist liverpool if that's why he was resting Song and other players like Arshavin and Nasri... Chelsea used their full trength team even when they're still in contention for 3 trophies... The FA Cup was Arsenal's best chance of a silverware after 4 seasons with nothing... I hope a mirracle happens to stop Arsene Wenger's "Trophy shy selection" in the champion's league

wenger is a jujuman, so he knows what to know, he cant danger ashavin...coz of the game coming up with liverpoool...now we have seen his 4 goal and understand why... u gotta choose the 4th place coz aston villa is still breathing down our neck

The results of the game were dissappointing to say the least. poor team selection, delayed substitutions by Venger really cost the team areal chance for some siverware this season. This except the champions league semi final place,is another season where there is nothing to boast about. The gunners have to give everyting to the champions league guest and Mr Venger should get his acts together. He had no reason to leave Asharfin out while he is not liable for champions league.Aserne got it wrong.

yeah i was amazed at wenger's policy in that game. denilson and diaby had no place in that game. replace one of them at least with nasri or arshavin. i would even pick ebuoe ahead of those 2 in that game. then when rvp was ineffective, why did he take so long to make a change??
Posted by kibirango james, uganda on 04/23/2009
oh why did diaby start that semi final because he gave away so many balls to the oponent? the manager also thought it late to bring Nasri and arshavin. atleast if they had come in for some 30 mins, you never any thing could have happened.
Posted by tony on 04/26/2009
diaby sucks on that day....giving away so many ball....
arahavin should start instead of RVP.....

Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
