Arsenal
Posted by David Young on 03/18/2009

In the last couple of weeks, Arsenal's season has taken on a much rosier hue. The goals have started flowing, fourth place has been wrested back off Aston Villa, safe passage to the Champions League Quarter Final has been achieved and a first trip to the new Wembley has been secured to face Chelsea in the FA Cup Semi Final. After several months of frustrating results, the Gunners have chiselled out some important wins that give them plenty to play for between now and May.

Last Saturday’s victory over Blackburn was crucial. After the previous stuttering performances at Ashburton Grove against Fulham and Sunderland, three points were needed to exert some pressure on the faltering Aston Villa and these were duly attained with some ease. An early own goal from the visitors gave the Gunners the advantage. Andrey Arshavin opened his Arsenal account in the 65th minute cutting down the bye-line and smashing a shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle. Substitute Emmanuel Eboue completed the 4-0 rout with two late strikes – the first a close-range effort and the second from the penalty spot.

The margin of victory could have been wider had Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner had their shooting boots on but the overall performance was convincing and the victory emphatic. All Blackburn had to offer in response was typical of a Sam Allardyce team – cynicism and violence. Several challenges by Blackburn players – most notably El Hadji Diouf’s disgraceful lunge on Manuel Almunia – would have received red cards on other days and with stronger refereeing. Morten Pedersen’s simulated dive told one everything one needed to know about this team. Allardyce made his name by keeping Bolton riding high on meagre resources. The methods he employed to do it through afforded him no credit and did nothing to enhance the sport. Nothing has changed since he took over at Blackburn.

Sam Allardyce’s protegy Phil Brown brought his Hull City team to the Grove on Tuesday for the FA Cup Sixth Round tie. It is clear he has learned a few tricks from his old master. Following a lively start, Hull took the lead in the 12th minute through a deflected Nick Barmby shot. What followed though was straight out of the Allardyce handbook of gamesmanship - endless and cynical time-wasting and constant hectoring of match officials by Assistant Manager Brian Horton.

Hull’s antics could not explain away Arsenal’s poor showing in the first half though. It was as dismal a forty five minutes from the Gunners as have been witnessed at Ashburton Grove this season. The second half began in much the same vein but the introduction of substitutes Nicklas Bendtner and Samir Nasri changed the match entirely. Bendtner provided a focal point for the attack and Nasri’s presence gave the midfield a more attacking configuration.

Two late goals clinched the tie and the big Dane was involved in both. First, with 15 minutes remaining, he tenaciously forced a cross over to Arshavin. The Russian side-footed the ball to Robin Van Persie who slammed home the equaliser. Then, ten minutes later, Nasri lofted a free-kick in to the middle of the penalty area. Bendtner and Djourou rose together and beat the flailing hands of Boaz Myhill to the ball. William Gallas got on the end of the nod-on and headed the winner. The Frenchman was clearly offside but, after the way Hull had approached holding onto their lead, this just made the moment all the sweeter. It was also pleasing to have got some benefit of the doubt from Mike Riley, a referee of staggering ineptitude, for a change.

After the match, a bitter Phil Brown bemoaned the offside winner and then accused Cesc Fabregas of spitting at his assistant manager – an allegation that the Spaniard categorically denies. Whatever might have been said on the pitch after the game and in the tunnel, Brown’s outburst and accusations really do expose him for the small man he is. In his post-match comments he lied about Arsene Wenger not shaking his had after the previous two meetings between the clubs. He repeated the statement during a radio interview the next day too. Video footage and photographs proved he was dishonest with regard to this point, so why should he be believed over the Fabregas allegation?

So, putting Phil Brown’s bleatings aside, Arsenal are now heading to Wembley on the 18th April to face Chelsea in the FA Cup Semi Final. Whatever the arguments for and against using the national stadium as a venue for semi-finals, there is no doubt that it going be a great day out and after a few years without a trophy, to be only one step away from a major final is good reason for some excitement.

It's about time bendner paid his dues. With no hope of winning the premeirship, the gunners should win either the FA cup or the champs league. The champs league would be sweeter and a feat of 2006 might be repeated.

Truth to tell, ever since Arsenal was champion of the Premier League 2004/2005, I have felt it has not done enough to claim a trophy. Lately, with the addition of Arshavin from St. Zenit and more players being healthy, it appears time is ripe for the Gunners to snare a couple of championship trophies.

VIVA ARSENAL

i must say i am pleased things seem to be looking up for arsenal,i hope the boys are realy going to stay focused cause arsenal and the faithful gunners just can't afford to end the present season with out a trohy.we are still keeping the faith.

It pays to be patient and I think Arsenal as a team is proving just that to their supporters and much praise must go Arsene Wenger's way for his belief in the team. Only time will tell but I believe other premier teams must be sighing with relief that Arsenal only got their groove back this late in the season. I believe the next season will start better.

Arshavin while! It's good to see the gunners back on track. Just keep the faith.

rosier indeed! while our players are blessed with natural talent, the belief has not always been there. our season can only improve from now. with everyone back we'll have competition for places in the first XI, and that'll keep our regular starters on the edge.

Aston Villa have their hands full with away matches at Liverpool and ManU, while Arsenal has it easier t Newcastle and home against Man City. Time to lock up 4th place in the EPL before they focus on the Champions League. Fabregas needs to be 100% to go anywhere.

If we can get Cesc and Adebayor back healthy you have to like our chances of winning either the FA Cup and/or the Champions League. No doubt it is going to be an exciting final 2 months but we just need to take it 1 game at a time and continue to be on the top of our game.

---Great job on the article David, keep up the good work it is much appreciated.

we can still win epl[though it is not likely] because man u is playing utter nonsense. we are taking europe & fa cup because we will beat man u in champions legue semis, & we will beat chelsea in fa cup semis as well. man u could take their carling cup & enjoy it while it lasts, because next season, that trophy is coming to north london

ARSENAL FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!

At Last Gunners are back on track, Man U and Chelsea will be nervous, both losing their matches. As for Hull, they deserve to be losers, slowing down the game, Arsenal even when ahead, keep pressing for more goals right till the end, thats what makes them the standout team. This is the Wenger way which is admired by millions of soccer fans all over the world.
My Bet, Gunners to win both Champions and FA cup.

Always a Gunner

The sure is light at the end of the tunnel and the darkest hour is just before dawn. Who could have thought Arsenal could score so many goals having the whole of Feb without scoring a league goal

Posted by sylvester sequeira on 03/22/2009

its time arsenal forwards start scoring instead of missing golden scoring chances and then holding their heads in disbelief also start passing to others who are in better position to score dont leave robin toure nasri clichey on the bench play your top players in every competition after all man utd won the carling cup i\with ronaldo

Posted by kaija on 03/22/2009

Next season Arsene wenger should buy mature players.

Posted by Leke Jay on 03/22/2009

It is nice to see Wenger's side restore some belief in the team, particularly for the fans. The potential is there and winning a trophy, any trophy, this season, will be a big plus and boost too.
Go for it , young Guns, step by step, game after game.

Posted by bava kottakkal on 03/23/2009

arsenel played a fantastic game against newcastle, especially in the second half.keep it up.you will become the champion.

Posted by Nirmalanathan on 03/23/2009

We are in good form right now and is very important to keep up the belief. Bendner, Denilson and Aboudiaby must belive that they are the top players of the team and should grow in confidence. Next year all the four trophies may land in arsenal.

About
David Young Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
