Sunday's encounter with Spurs at White Hart Lane was always going to be a tough assignment for the Gunners. On top of all the pride at stake, this game could have been significant in defining the course of the remainder of the season for both teams. A defeat for either side had the potential to be a disastrous blow to both confidence and point's totals with ramifications beyond any of the usual post-match banter or gloating.

As it was, a draw was a fair result and, from the Gunners' point of view, arguably represented the best they could have hoped for from a game that they had to play the majority of with ten men. Once again, Emmanuel Eboue let himself, the team and the fans down with two instances of petulance that earned him a brace of yellow cards and, thus, a sending off. What made his dismissal more frustrating was that in the opening stages of the match he had produced some of his most encouraging football of the season so far, even getting as far as putting the ball in the Spurs net only for the goal to be ruled out for a push.

Though Eboue got some sympathy from certain quarters when getting booed off against Wigan at Ashburton Grove, it is hard to continue to feel sorry for a player who does so little to help himself. Arsene Wenger has given him countless chances and he has appeared in the starting line-up many more times than either his form or attitude have deserved. One wonders whether his dismissal on Sunday will see the managerâ..s patience finally evaporate.

Certainly, with the arrival of Andrey Arshavin and the imminent return to action of both Theo Walcott and Cesc Fabregas, it is hard to imagine how Eboue could possibly expect more than to be warming the bench for the remainder of the season. He is a player that Arsene Wenger has kept faith with for too long. It is now time to give others, even youngsters like Jack Wilshere, a chance.

Another player who might find it hard to regain his place in the starting line-up in a few weeks time is Emmanuel Adebayor. He limped off with a hamstring pull early in the game but, despite that, he has done little in the past few months to both justify his automatic selection or the massive pay rise he extracted from the club during the summer. He has been fortunate that his most obvious replacement, Nicklas Bendtner, has also struggled to find form this season otherwise he might have found himself spending more time on the sidelines. Should the Dane find his touch in the next few weeks though, the Togo man might have a battle on his hands to get his place back.

Certainly, Adebayor's injury and Eboue's sending off somewhat limited any opportunities Arsene Wenger had to make any tactical substitutions to try to win the game against Tottenham. As the game wore on it was a case of seeing whether the ten men could fashion a decisive chance without giving anything away at the other end. It turned out that even one man down the Gunners were still more than a match for Spurs and, though both teams had a couple of opportunities to nick all three points, the game ended in a stalemate with neither team losing facing nor going away pointless. It was hard to be satisfied with the outcome but, under the circumstances, it could have been worse.

The Gunners take a break from the Premier League this weekend and play their postponed FA Cup replay against Cardiff City at Ashburton Grove on Monday night. Last weekâ..s cancellation due to snow means that both teams are in the frustrating position of being a round behind everyone else with the winners having to fit their Fifth Round tie with Burnley on a midweek night. Still, it is an irritation that Arsenal ought to be glad to accept. Should they get through on Monday, the Burnley match would be at Ashburton Grove and would seem to present an opportunity for revenge for the Carling Cup defeat at Turf Moor as well as advancing to the latter stages of the tournament.

Disappointingly, Andrey Arshavin is ineligible to take part in Monday's replay against Cardiff because he was not signed at the time of the first meeting. Arsenal supporters will have to wait one more week to get their first glimpse of him when he makes his likely debut against Sunderland on Saturday week. The squad are desperate for some fresh input and all eyes will be on the Russian to see if he can be the catalyst for the re-ignition of Arsenalâ..s season.

I definitely agree on the above comment given to Eboue, in my opnion he is the one that distruct Arsenal result. Rember Lumberg playing at the same place scoring many goals, playing all the feild, and Theo Walcotte, a wanderful player having bright future can create somany chance and scor goals, on the contrary Eboue has done very little this year and last year.Arsen Wenger should not tolerate Eboue anymore. moreover Abudiaby also lacks consistency eventhough he is a good player.Adibayor should struggle more to get his place back. Finally I want to see Van persi and Arshavin leading the Arsenal Front.

I am a Arsenal Fan but I am not a fan of Eboue!! I really do not believe he is good enough to play for Arsenal and it is obvious he does not have the right temperament. He in my opinion should not even be on the squad! He has not improved as a player over the last few years and it is time for Arsene Wenger to off load him. I welcome the purchase of the Russian play maker and the imminent return of Eduardo, Fabregas and Walcott. I truly believe that Arsenal will e able to get that champion league place ahead of Aston Villa with the return of our top players.

I think eboue is not good enough to play the kind of role wenger want him to play and will not get the chance to prove that again. i cant wait to see the combination of arshavin, vp,Eduardo and Cesc

Posted by Christian Foi on 02/14/2009

I still think that TOURE should replace FLAMINI's position, which is holding midlefielder enabling FABREGAS to play more an attacking role. DOJOUROU or SILVESTRE should lead the center of the defence with GALLAS. ARSHEVIN and NASIR should hold the wings. EDUARDO should play below VAN PERSI(or ADEBAYOR, BENTNER) in the attack.

Posted by Don Soh on 02/14/2009

Eboue can be a good right back but definitely not suitable to be a winger. The lack of creativity and ball control did no good to his final distribution of the balls. A good player but not good for a team of Arsenal calibre. Vela shld be given the opportunity to shows what he can create down the right side. With Arsavin feeding the final ball to Ade and Van persie, goals will start flowing again. The biggest beneficial from Arshavin signing will be Nasri from my point of view. He will be given more room and free to roam around the mid field and can just be the differnce for the team.

Posted by KY on 02/14/2009

In my opinion, it is a mistake to field Eboue to the right-hand side of the midfield. As a powerful and quick right back, he definitely lacks the technical abilities expected from an attacking midfield player, e.g. accurate passing and dribbling skills. Having played in that position for over a season, he is still 'adapting' to that role. Wenger, the mastermind behind the tatical change, should understand it better than anyone of us. It is really my wish that he will admit failure on that arrangement, though he should never do it in public, and place a real attacking player (e.g. Arshavin or, even, Nasri)in that position.

Posted by daniel on 02/14/2009

definitely not a good time for eboue to be having problems, with arshavin almost ready, walcott and eduardo back, and fabregas returning in a few weeks time.
he may not see first-team action for a long while.

Posted by monte on 02/14/2009

If the bid from Athletico for Eboue was legit, Wenger should have definately accepted it. The sooner we sell him the better...

Posted by brian kandiye on 02/14/2009

couldnt agree more.eboue badly let the team down at spurs.he isnt a good player at all and should have been concentrating on his game rather than argue unnecessarily with the ref.Wenger should discard him now that we have arshavin and walcott ,rosicky, and fabregas are on the mend.

Adebayor is another liability as his chance conversation rate has to be the poorest of all top strikers.he needs eight chances to score one goal whilst lads like Owen and Torresscore once or twice per every two chances they get.Arsenal create dozens of chances which were ade sure footed, they would surely be up the log.Vela and eduardo should surely be selected ahead of the clumsy Bendtner.Van Persie has been very lethal up front but Ade and Bendtner have been poor to put it mildly

Posted by Stradlin78 on 02/14/2009

Actually, what did arsenal badly needs is ..consistency.. that can only be built through ..experience... The current arsenal is ..missing.. these things. They have the ..talent.. but ..talent.. and ..experience.. is two different things. I..m not believed in Kaka or CR or Messi because nothing much these ..saint.. can do individually.

Arsenal should consider in bringing on some ..mentors.. into their squad. Supporters can be patient but for how long? Arsenal can not expect to loss 5 main characters (rosicky and eduardo .. injured, hleb, flamini and gilberto) and assume to win the premier league for the followings season. Something odd, isn..t? I..m agreed with Gilberto..s comment recently that it is hard to see arsenal struggle at this level. Come on, I just missed the lighting-counter and arts of pires-gilberto-viera-ljungberg-bergkamp-henry.

My main point is ..BRING ON MORE MENTORS. to guide this schoolboys before its to late.

The problem is with Arsene Wenger. Eboue is a right full back. He has had to cope with the misplaced positions in the team. All other players in his position cannot defend effectively. What the Gunners require is a central figure, a Viera, a Henry, an Adams etc, and maybe other players will fall in place.

Posted by Sagnik Roy on 02/14/2009

I agree that Eboue has been performing terribly, but we all have to understand that he is naturally a right back. So he is defensive minded. With Sagna taking the right back spot and no width in the squad currently due to injuries, Eboue had to be used as a midfielder. Obviously he would struggle. But last season there were some glimpses of talent and I think Wenger can bring that out again. Can't wait to see Arshavin though!

I believe in the ability that Arsenal has and it's over until it's over.So don't my team yet...
Arsenal is going through some tough times, but it is just the way life is you can't predict the outcome of anything before its starts...I have faith in the team and the players that they'll get everthing right not when we expect them to do it,but just at the right time.We have a great coach...
Arsenal is going to make........

First of all it is Ljungberg not Lumberg. Second of all it is Walcott not Walcotte. Third of all it is Arsene not Arsen. Forth of all it is Abou Diaby not Abudiaby. Fifth of all it is Adebayor not Adibayor. im getting sick of this... Van Persie not Van persi. At least u got Arshavin right.

Now.. the real stuff..

Eboue is in the transition period of mastering the midfield position. He does not destruct the arsenal result. it is a team game. How could you blame one person for the team result? he's best position will be in the right back where he feel comfortable. Just ask u this question. if not Eboue then who other than Walcott that always having injury with his shoulder?

Posted by Berfie on 02/14/2009

Agree, some of the players are performing below par this season. Even though I'm not supporting any particular club, Eboue should take a break from the first team to get back up to form and consistency (unless he's determined to play himself out of the team). As for Adebayor, I'm figuring that the lacking of better support from the midfield may have contributed to his poor form (especially with the deeper role played by Cesc Fab).

I hope to see more of Wilshere and Walcott (or even Ramsey) get more runtime in the team. Ashravin can play the shadow role (maybe playmaker role) with Van Persie and Vela leading the line until Eduardo gets back fully fit and his deadly self.

I'm of the opinion that Arsene wenger destroyed eboue's career, since the time he pushed him to play upfront he has been finding it dificult to cope with good football. Consider eboue playing from right full back seasons ago, he was an excellent player that defended well and supported the attack more than what sagna is doing. Personally I beleive eboue is not meant to play wide upfront but he his a good defender that overlaps well. But currently wenger has made him to loose his confidence by constantly playing him in a wrong position which is obvious he is not comfortable with.I urge wenger to please save eboue's career. Let us just imagine walcot playing right full back?
Thank you

Posted by sean on 02/14/2009

well.. i wudnt disagree tht eboue has been disappointing, bt if u think carefully, he has been playing out of his natural position. imagine gary neville, bosingwa or arbeloa playing at the right of midfield. hw much bttr wil they be? nt every1 is thierry henry, bein able to convert to another position with deadly results. rmbr the days wen eboue was at his best in the year wen arsenal reach the champions league final? he nvr got a chance to play at right back agen after tht. after playin poorly for a season, he has loss his confidence. n der werent many ppl who had faith in him or supporting him in this matter. so to be fair to eboue, he isnt the terrible player most ppl think he is.

There are two things that I just don't understand with Wenger and Eboue. Firstly, why did Wenger change Eboue to midfield? During his first two season at Arsenal, we saw an attacking fullback who marauded the right flank with his pace and crosses while providing a stingy defense that took Arsenal to the final of th Champions League. When he was shifted to midfield, everything about him was gone, replaced by a different player. Which brings me to my second point. Why, when playing in right midfield, does he always drifts inside? To some extent he's suddenly at the left flank. I wish he could vary his moves a lot more. And with Arshavin coming in and Walcott close to action, his days as a Gunner are numbered, unless Wenger puts him back where he belongs, at right back.

"and Theo Walcott, a wanderful player having bright future can create somany chance and scor goals, on the contrary Eboue has done very little this year and last year" - Anbese

No offence made, but will still have to. Since when did Theo made a real impact on Arsenal after numerous chance given to him? Drop the Liv game, where he ran the ball all the way up, a very other instances, he barely made an impact, which was the case why Wenger had to put Eboue on the right wing. Eboue is more consistent than Walcott, history says it all and even this season itself if you take away the "sent off".

Walcott is simply overrated by the media that suddenly he has become a C. Ronaldo of Arsenal, where he barely had to chance to start consecutive games or even two games. Everytime he was given the chance, he couldn't keep hold of it.

And another fact to put together, Eboue wasn't under-performed, he was simply inefficiently put on a wrong position, same with the game when he got jeered off.

We should all remember, Eboue was along the ones who played beautifully to bring us into the CL final which we did excellent. I reach to a point as a fan to stop blaming the players but rather point out the obvious fact that has blinded me all these years, sometimes when players, or captains are to be blamed, we should look at who's the one in charge. If he's the one to take credit for success, then he should take responsibility for underachievement.

Eboue to me, is by far the most reliable player in Arsenal. When we lost Rosicky last season, that's when Eboue had to move in on RM, and Hleb had to move to LM. Wenger tried putting Walcott every now and then, not merely the age issue. Walcott wasn't 17 at that age, he was 19. He's 20 now, and age wasn't the factor why Wenger didn't put him. It was because everytime he was started, he couldn't play the game at all. Even with his pace. Hence Wenger had to turn to Eboue, and he had to pick his game from there.

As a fan, i take caution not to be bias that the manager has done great things for the club, that he's become invincible. That's what i'm aware of, that it won't blind me from blaming any issues or problems of the club's underachievement on players itself.

Many precaution where Wenger could have avoided, injuries didn't hit overnight, he knew the major ones before the season began. He knew if he had to make a provision for a certain players to injure and ones to cover. Since 2004, there's been a down slope of character in Wenger, if i may point out. Probably his own agenda, or his own ego of his own agenda. Whichever comes first.

-Poor planning and failure to retain players and build on success- was the issue.

Imagine if we had Pennant or Sidwell now, they'd immediately fit into the first team desperately. But those days they couldn't, not even on the bench to take their chances, it clearly shows a downslope in "quality" of the squad, not quantity. Lack of competition.

I agreed with the article Eboue is a good player buth he needs to be more matured on the pitch. Also on Adebayor he needs to get back to form or he will loose his position after he gets back from his injury.

I would like to see more of Vela and bentner on the second half of every game i bet you they will always make a difference.

I agree to see Arshavin in the Arsenal Front, however, due to the loses of Alexander Hleb and possibly Tomas Rosicky, Arshavin might be better suited to play on the wings, or be a striking midfielder. If Arshavin were to be in the front of the formation he would have to outplay and take the positions of Eduardo and Bendtner which seems unlikely. Where Arsenal needs Arshavin is in the Midfield to either substitute or to accomadate Fabregas and Samir Nasri, all of which are creative and "goal-minded" play makers.

Posted by mike from sydney on 02/14/2009

have to agree, eboue has worked pretty hard since he got booed off the pitch a while back, but displays like this in cruch games show that he's liability, no matter how hard he works. we really need more steel in the team to keep us solid, but unstable characters like this make us liable to crumble when the chips are down. also agree on ade, he's had a poor season all told. it will be good to have some competition for places with eduardo coming back to match fitness (he did pretty well for croatia midweek), we've really missed a "fox in the box" type of player ever since he got his leg broke (ade is still very profligate with his chances and needs at least 5 to score one). looking forward to seeing how arshavin will fit in too, i thnk he's a great buy for us.

good story mate, keep it up.

adebayo has not done well this season. nevertheless the management should give him more chance.still have confidence in the togolist international and i believe that the of the cecs fabrigas and theo walcot will

Posted by eze on 02/15/2009

i just think eboue should find his way out of arsenal he's not just the guy we all used to know and love. also on that list's diaby, that man just annoys me eachtime he has the ball, we could still give bendtner a chance

Posted by saalu reuben on 03/30/2009

An Togolist is a player that we can't allow him go somehow because he did a powerful job for us 2007-2008 and this 2009 he score 8 goals for premier league and 4 goals for uefa champions league so adebayor player not to jot with
