Arsenal

A stout defensive display from West Ham kept the Gunners at bay at Ashburton Grove yesterday and earned the visitors a point in a match in which they had been pinned back in their own half for virtually the whole ninety minutes.

On Arsenalâ..s part, there was plenty of perspiration but precious little inspiration as they plugged away trying to prise open the Hammersâ.. defence but just could not whittle out enough gaps to claim a winning goal. Despite holding huge amounts of possession throughout, they failed to really work Robert Green in the West Ham goal to any significant degree and it was another disappointing outcome for the home supporters who, though refraining from noticeably jeering the team as they left the pitch, were entitled to a few grizzles at the final whistle.

The Gunners have only netted five times in their last six home Premier League fixtures. This statistic highlights where most of the Gunnersâ.. problems have lain in recent months and emphasises how much the team has struggled without the creative contribution of Cesc Fabregas, the width provided by Tomas Rosicky and the pace of Theo Walcott. On the other side of the coin, the team are unbeaten in their last ten Premiership matches, which does at least suggest that the ship has been somewhat steadied from a defensive point of view. That said, even the most positive Arsenal supporter would have a hard time being convinced that the current back four have the potential to be as consistently mean as the famous "One-nil to the Arsenal" defensive line.

The injured players mentioned above will eventually recover, but with the earliest expected return of all three not being for at least a couple of months yet, (and depending on any late action in the last 24 hours of the transfer window), the opportunity for anything to be taken from this season could be long gone by then.

Yesterdayâ..s performance was at least an improvement on the display given against Everton at Goodison Park during the week. Arsenal came up against a tenacious home team and looked second best for most of the match. Tim Cahill gave the Toffeemen the lead with a spring-heeled leap that saw him rise high above Gael Clichy to head firmly past Manuel Almunia. The Gunners deserved nothing from the game and that was the way it looked to be going until Robin Van Persie saved the day with a last gasp equaliser in the depths of injury time. Incredibly, it was the teamâ..s first serious shot on target all evening and, though credit must be given to them for playing until the final whistle, it was a goal that spared their blushes from what was otherwise a feeble showing.

Van Persie has been one bright light amongst the gloom of some of the recent performances. His goals and assists have kept the team afloat through this difficult spell when injuries have diminished the teamâ..s creative resources and some of the players who have been regularly selected are desperately out of form. It was strange then that Arsene Wenger should elect to drop the Dutchman to the bench for yesterdayâ..s visit by West Ham. The explanation that it was to protect him from injury verged on the bizarre. Whilst the team is going through a sticky patch, fielding the one player who is actually delivering at the moment would seem to be something of a given. Though the Dutchman did get 22 minutes yesterday when he came on as substitute, by that time West Ham were firmly dug in and were not going to be breached.

It will be interesting to see if Wenger starts with Van Persie in Tuesday nightâ..s FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Cardiff City at Ashburton Grove. As things stand, the FA Cup would seem to be the Gunnersâ.. most likely route to a trophy this term and Tuesday nightâ..s team selection ought to be a fair litmus test as to whether Wenger is of that opinion too. Certainly, a home tie against either West Brom or Burnley in the next round ought to be an adequate incentive not to take any chances risking a drastically weakened team against Cardiff. Still, with his record in the FA Cup since joining the club, the manager knows what it takes to win the tournament and he will also surely be aware that the Bluebirds will not be coming to the Grove on Tuesday just for a night out in London. Cardiff will be buoyed by the fact they were able to create so many chances in the first game at Ninian Park and are sure to be trying for their lives in this match.

Though the Gunners are finding life hard at the moment, a win on Tuesday could restore some confidence in front of goal - and a resurgence of belief will be much needed ahead of next weekendâ..s visit to White Hart Lane to face Spurs.

what's all this sadness about with you gooners?1st of all am one of y'all lest you begin thinking am an enemy a'way i beleive what we should be doing now is showing some more support for the team...fine we r 10 points off the pace and sure aston villa are a threat to the final champions league spot but surely we shouldnt only concentrate on the -ve aspects of the season how about feeling encouraged that the team has only shipped in 2 goals in january compared to 6 goals in october or 4 both in november and december?and how about the arrival of andrey arshavin or the promising progress of eduardo, rosicky, fabregas, and walcott?am just saying football is unpredictable you never know what's going to happen so its not wise to write off the young guns just yet as long as they stay focussed, not let the criticism get to them and put up a fight and a spirited one as such...well who knows?i dont i dont think arsene does but lets just have a little faith i say.

I think it is time arsene re writyes the plot because sticking on the same and blaming the other teams for playing defensive is not a solution i mean ..we need something pride well that can take a back seat. heartbreaks we have hard enough and want something to be happy about not proud about. so make it happen coach!!!!!!!

All I can say is Arsenal are always in the hunt, and lately, we have been smacked with injuries and on a tight budget because of the new stadium and global economic situation. I am disappointed we will not obtain any honors this season again, but understand the situation. My biggest question is why Sir Alex Ferguson finds a way to get his team to win and Arsene cannot. I realize their styles are completely disparate, but one has 3 EPL trophies and the other many, many more. I love Arsenal and believe we can nick Chelsea for the 4th CL spot (Villa are the real deal for 3rd most likely), and if fully fit next season, will challenge on all fronts for silverware. Let's all hang in there and realize the EPL is tough from top to bottom and appreciate the past 12 years of great football with many more years to come. Oh, and why does Spain and Italy get two EUFA cup spots and the EPL only one? UP THE ARSE!!!

As a gooner fan for life, i'm very disapponited with our current form...as a matter of fact our performance for the past two seasons. We are under-performing and I believe a change at the "helm" is very necessary.

Yeah I know some if not most of you will be knocking me to say that but we must be reasonable and true to ourselves. Are we not tired of ManUs Cheslkis and now Villa fans mocking us about playing UEFA CUP..that's if Everton doesn't overtake us?

Since Fabulous injury, gaffer has been playing with three defensive midfielders (15;17;27) and we all know that Arsenal creativity comes from our midfield. I also believe Wenger is the cause of us "booing" Eboue almost everytime, because he continues to play me in midfield where he's clearly not at his best. I know we have a long injury list, but that shouldn't be any excuse for losing and drawing soo many of our regular "3 points" games!

I hope to hear positive remarks..

i don't know what is in AW mind but it's fact that Arsenal should only focus on winning every premier league game and prioritize Champion League cause we never win this competition.

About
David Young Sam Limbert: My retirement as a football player came at the age of 14 due to being rubbish, it's fair to say I was more Kaba Diawara than Thierry Henry, so I turned my focus to writing about the game. I'm a lifelong Arsenal fan and have been lucky enough to watch the team across England and Europe. My favourite Gunner of all time is Dennis Bergkamp, and the 2004 Invincibles is the greatest side I've ever seen in English football. I try to be positive about the Arsenal as it's the hope that keeps us going! Follow me on twitter @SamsMatchReport.
